Meet Ashley Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Scott.

Ashley, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama but I’ve been in Los Angeles for ten years and can comfortably call it “home”. I started my design business almost three years ago and kinda on a whim. I’ve always been interested in design and decorating but never saw it as a career option. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur though with plenty of big ideas and no follow through. That all changed when I decided to start my design business. I’m completely self- taught. I got my start by reaching out to friends who in order to build my portfolio and quicker than I’d anticipated, I had paying clients. That has snowballed into some really unique opportunities and fun, creative projects!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I design and style interior spaces. My company, Scout Modern, is an interior design and styling studio, specializing in clean, modern designs with a punch. I’m probably most known for my use of statement walls. I love incorporating bold wallpapers, art installations & textural elements into a space. I also like to blend vintage and handcrafted pieces and seek out (or “Scout”) unique pieces from across the globe. I love creating with artisans and learning their story as I incorporate their pieces into the spaces I design. I typically work with influencers and other entrepreneurs to create interiors suited to their own personal brands and I am often called to create camera-ready, Instagram-worthy spaces that can be used as de facto film sets. I enjoy working with these clients as I am typically given more creative freedom and get to make more bold design choices.

What I want most is to create spaces where my clients feel happy and inspired.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself and your work out there and don’t allow criticism to stifle your creativity. Your art won’t be appealing to everyone and that’s ok!

My role at Scout Modern is more than simply creating a beautiful space but also building a business. I’m a creative, yes, but I’ve really had to tap into some of my other talents and learn to outsource where needed in order to handle the entrepreneurial nature of things.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My projects have been featured on Domino, Lonny, Apartment Therapy, Rue and HGTV. You can support my work by hiring me to create your very own inspired living (or work) space! Other than that, follow our blog for design tips, trends, and sourcing. And of course on Instagram @scout.modern
