Meet Ashley Harris of Loveology Podcast in South LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Harris.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from the south, Arkansas to be exact. My journey to Los Angeles has been a long one. I come from an underprivileged background. I worked a night shift while attending school full time to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. I graduated in 2008 during the height of the recession. With no job prospects in my field of study and a desire to do something meaningful with my life, I decided to join the US Navy. I served four years and was deployed once during that time.

When my term of service ended, I decided I wanted to pursue my passion again. In 2015, armed with education benefits from the military, I enrolled in film school in LA to earn a Master’s degree in Documentary Filmmaking and my husband and I moved across country with a six month old baby. After graduation, I would finally get my first job in the media industry as an assistant in the documentary department of a well-known media company and was ready to make major moves. Life would throw me a curveball. I found out I was pregnant with my second child.

This part of the story goes like so many other women stories in this country. My salary wasn’t much and I would have two children in daycare which is extremely expensive. There was no room for flexibility in my work schedule and my commute to work in LA traffic was at least 2 hours a day. I made the decision to put my career on hold to stay at home full time. While being a mother is definitely one of the most rewarding jobs in life I knew I would need some sort of creative outlet. Something that I could do for myself but with a newborn it couldn’t be too time-consuming or too complicated, a podcast would be the answer.

I recently had been turned on to podcasts and thought that it might be something I might like to try. I just needed to figure out what I wanted to talk about. I have always been very passionate about helping others and even considered becoming a marriage and family therapist in the past. I never went down that path of becoming a therapist however I have been in a healthy marriage for 7 years, a parent 5 of those years, and thought I could have something to offer people who may be struggling in this area. So the idea came to do a relationship podcast. Jason (my husband) could co-host to provide the male perspective and we could share our personal experiences along with researched information and interviews from other couples. Loveology Podcast was born. We know that we aren’t experts so Loveology Podcast is to be a place where we study love. Jason and I are learning and growing with our audience.

We are elated that our podcast has been steadily growing and performing well. Loveology Podcast has peaked at #64 in the relationship category of Apple Podcasts (United States) and has consistently been in the top 200 in the relationship category. We have also charted in the top 100 in the relationship category in countries such as Canada, Great Britain, Denmark, Australia and Ghana. However, the greatest joy is how much we have also grown as a couple because of this podcast.

Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be obstacles and challenges, some of which we are currently dealing with. The work-life balance is always a challenge. We have been releasing an episode every week for a year now and accomplishing just that can be definitely difficult sometimes. I believe in producing quality content that will serve our audience and sometimes that can be time-consuming. Outside of that, we are still on the journey of growing our audience and attracting more advertisers.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Loveology Podcast story. Tell us more about the business.
