Meet Ashley Fitzgerald of OC Newborns in Rancho Santa Margarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Fitzgerald .

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Calgary, Alberta Canada (cool, eh?) and now call Orange County, California is my home. There have been plenty of places in-between then and now, but I plan on keeping this my home for the next several years. I am a mother of three beautiful children, who I share with my hard-working husband. My husband also helps me run OC Newborns, we make a great team! I am a newborn photographer in Orange County, and have been taking photos professionally since 2009.

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about art and photography. Every opportunity I had in school, I would take elective classes in either photography or art. I was constantly learning as much as I could. Eventually, my passion turned into a hobby, and after getting married in 2009, I turned my hobby into a full-blown business.

I started my photography business mostly shooting weddings and family photos. The conversion from a hobby to a business was scary at first. Putting myself out there to have people I didn’t know, to trust me on their wedding day or with their family portraits was nerve-wracking. I slowly but surely gained confidence and skill and was staying steadily busy after my first year in business.

After a couple years of weddings and family photos, and after having children, I decided that it was time for a change. In late 2010, I converted my wedding and family portrait business into a newborn and children photography studio. This was a drastic departure from my current skillset, and opened up all new challenges and learning experiences. However, I was fully committed to the change, and was excited at learning the art of professional studio lighting, and baby posing techniques.

Starting out, my “studio” was the living room of our tiny two bedroom apartment. As time went on, our family moved into bigger and bigger spaces that allowed me to expand my capabilities as a studio photographer. Fast forward 7 years later, and I now have a fully converted garage studio with hundreds of props and multiple set-ups. I am still constantly tweaking my technique, and learning new things all of the time, which has been great at keeping me constantly engaged in my work.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road from where I started to where I am today has definitely had its moments. The transition from weddings to newborns was essentially starting by business over from the ground up. Not only was the clientele different, but so was the environment and skill set I needed. My first studio space was small and cramped – since it was my living room. The limited space I had constrained the different poses I could do, as well as the amount of lighting setups I could do. Also, diving head first into a completely different type of photography meant that I had to learn all new skills and techniques. My commitment to my craft is what got me through all of these challenges, forces me to constantly rethink the way I am doing things, and keeps me passionate about my work. I am continuously educating myself, taking classes, learning new techniques, and updating my styles.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about OC Newborns – what should we know?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Rancho Santa Margarita is a great place to be. RSM is a beautiful city, and is one of Orange County’s younger communities where a lot of growing families live, which is my ideal clientele. RSM is easily accessible to all of Orange County via the 241 and 73 toll roads. There are many family-friendly surrounding cities as well, which bring in a wide variety of clientele. I highly recommend someone starting out their career in my field to be in RSM.
