Meet Ashley Chafin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Chafin.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been an artist as long as I can remember. My father was a musician, and my mother would draw all of the ads for his band in the local papers. In junior high and high school, I would devour 17 and YM magazines and draw all of the models constantly. I preferred being in my room drawing to pretty much anything else… I minored in Studio Art in college, but never pursued it as a career because we are always told not to!

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! There have been too many times I have put my art on the back burner. I also couldn’t stand when a teacher would touch my art or make adjustments to what I was working on. I felt like it tainted it and it was no longer my work, so I started to shy away from taking classes or learning anything new. I have luckily outgrown this lol. Recently, I had to take a medical leave for a few months. Someone had left a copy of the book “The Artist’s Way” on the free table, so I grabbed it on my way out. I really feel it reignited my love for art. I had been doing pet portraits but hadn’t painted anything for myself in years. Now, I have created some of my best work, and have had two shows, after years of nothing.

Please tell us more about your art.
My paintings are weird! Right now, I am working on the concept of Cacopohobia, which is the fear of ugly. No one fears being ugly more than the adolescent girl, and I have focused mainly on Marcia Brady. I am using fake teeth I picked up at a yard sale, as well as some 99 store finds. My work can be a bit unsettling, but we are all unsettled. And we all have the teeth dream.

Also, I painted a naked Yoda.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Social media has been a game changer for artists, and art is becoming much more accessible. I just need to figure out how to use it better. #grandma.
