Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cates-Leibbrand.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
30 years ago, I rode a pony at a birthday party… from then on, nothing was as intriguing or as important as horses. I took riding lessons, rode for my grandfathers business partner, worked at the stables and eventually started my own exercise rider business. It just continued to grow from there into training horses for people and giving riding lessons. At 18, I moved to the current location in Terra Bella where we are now, it has certainly grown into more than I ever expected. We run an excellent riding school, host events, train barrel horses and farm pistachios & citrus. Recently, we built a covered arena so our students and clients can enjoy year-round riding.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most definitely not. Moving to a small town where you do not know anyone makes for a hard breakthrough, but it certainly was worth the struggle.
Unity Farms – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our riding school is definitely the highlight of our business! We boast a string of 20 fabulous school horses that are for all levels of riders, from complete beginners to those who are ready to compete. Our atmosphere here is very different from alot of competition facilities, we are a barn family. Our riders are VERY supportive and complementary of one another. I take great pride in teaching them good sportsmanship and the art of encouragement.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is word of mouth recommendation. We rarely advertise and stay full, when people tell their friends about you, you know you’re doing a good job.
Another marker of success is when my clients have learned enough to take their horses home. Giving people the confidence to care for a 1200lb animal by themselves in their own backyard is definitely a highlight.
