Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashanti Hendon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashanti. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been an avid thrift shopper for vintage items for several years now. Thrifting is very therapeutic for me and I love finding threads that have a slim to none chance of someone else having. Over the years, I had collected numerous of clothing that I had no idea what I was going to do with.
One day, a light bulb went off in my head! I thought to myself, “Start a business! Share these amazing gems with other vintage fashion lovers!” I then contacted a friend of mine, who is also a business consultant, and she took me through the basics of starting a business and literally held my hand. In a matter of weeks, I had a website, social media outlets, a seller’s permit and a business license. Six months later, I just attended my first pop-up market as a vintage clothing reseller vendor.
Has it been a smooth road?
Working a full-time job is a struggle in itself, let alone also being a business owner. Unfortunately, it has been difficult for me to pour into my business the way that I need to. Recently, I had a heart-to-heart with myself and decided to stop making excuses for not making time for something that I’ve created an am very passionate about. Someone once told me, “I don’t care how busy a person is, they make time for what they want”. With that being said, going forward, my business is my number one priority and not working for someone else!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Set Free Vintage story. Tell us more about the business.
At this time, Set Free Vintage caters to vintage fashion for women. Our motto is, “You seek, we find”. We know that there are a collection of vintage fashion lovers out there but a lot of people don’t have the time or patience to go searching for it. We passionately love hunting for vintage and it brings us great joy when our shoppers find items that they’re totally in love with. Hopefully, sooner than later, we plan to include men’s vintage as well!
As a company, we are most proud of tapping into the fashion industry where items that we find are rare, sustainable, and tradable. Buying vintage gives people an ethical way of satisfying a crave for new clothes without getting caught up in the fast-fashion culture. #noshade What sets us apart from others is that we listen to our shoppers wants and needs. Essentially we want them to be happy and satisfied, so we love any kind of feedback to be able to continue doing so. We strive to provide unforgettable experiences so that we stay in the forefront of our shopper’s minds.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Throwback fashion trends are definitely making a comeback these days. Designers and celebrities are borrowing vintage styles to add eclectic vibes to their new modern looks. I’m hoping that the new generation will start embracing the vintage trend and aim for more individuality in their styling and threads. Over the next 5-10 years, I will be actively preparing for “Vintage fashion of tomorrow”. I encourage all millennials to start putting away clothing that our children can enjoy in their wardrobe and be able to beautifully express themselves through their style.
