Meet Arthur Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arthur Johnson.

Arthur, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated Cum Laude from Missouri Southern State University in 2013 with a Bachelor’s in Orchestra Percussion and a minor in business. After graduating, I moved to LA and I received Musician’s Institute 35th anniversary scholarship to further my education. While on campus, I walked into an audition room and sat in the back watching drummers audition for a new artist. I was approached by a manager who convinced me that I should audition as well. So I did which resulted in me getting the gig and I left school. Since then, I’ve been consistently gigging for seven years. Funny thing is that manager and I have remained friends till this day; she’s my industry mom, haha. I’ve been blessed with many opportunities ranging from MTV performances with Kid Ink to the 2019 Emmy Awards and The Hollywood Bowl “We Can Survive” show, opening for popular artists like The Jonas Brothers & Taylor Swift. I work for a great company called West Coast Music in one of their premier corporate bands “The Midnight Special.” Also, I work with many amazing up and coming artists in LA such as Skylar Stecker and ALT Bloom. I’ve been very blessed to the point that it never feels like work because I enjoy my job immensely. I’ve always been raised to keep God first and because of that, the sky would be the limit.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not always been smooth though. In general, it is tough to find work in the music field in LA. Everyone is here trying to do exactly as you are. I’ve had to work part-time jobs to support my ambitions and dreams, but I had a great work ethic instilled in me from a young age. So, I always kept pushing forward and had to keep faith that my time would eventually come.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a drummer, my job is lay down the groove and make crowd sway or the record bounce. What sets me apart from other top musicians really isn’t much. I feel like most of us have amazing talent & great abilities, but I’ve learned it’s about who wants to work with you and the positive energy you bring to an artist or particular projects. You can be amazing but if no one likes you, you won’t work.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would do everything the same. My path has molded me into this version of Myself. In all the good and bad I like the person who has come out on the other side of ever tough decision.
