Today we’d like to introduce you to Art Ruffin.
Art, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Columbus Ohio and started playing sports in high school. I went on to play college basketball and a little semi-pro ball but nothing came from it. So I stayed in Columbus and worked a normal 9-5 but still continued to play rec ball and train.
One morning I got a call that my cousin was shot and killed and that really hit me hard. I went into security because I wanted to protect people and do my best not to let what happened to my cousin happen to anyone else. I worked my 9-5 during the day and security on weekends but always kept up on my training. I eventually started doing private security and had private clients and would escort celebrities when they came into town.
I was in a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend who lived in LA. (originally from Columbus) I felt like I didn’t have any more room to grow in Columbus and needed something more. In 2012 I packed up everything and we drove across the country to LA, a big scary step. I started off doing security, event security, private security, working for bars, bartending and going to the gym to stay fit.
I started training at Crunch fitness in 2014. I did security from 7p-3a most nights and started training clients at 5a till noon most days. One of my security clients asked me to train them as well and asked me why I do both jobs when I could just train? I explained what happened to my cousin and how I wanted to protect and save people. She then replied, aren’t you saving people when training them to be healthier and have a better quality of life? And that really hit me. I wouldn’t have to work nights, I would have more time with my family and friends and not put my life on the line. So I went into training full time.
I worked for Crunch for a couple of years doing private and group training with a few private clients on the side. I grew tired of the corporate life and all the BS and decided to strictly private. I had a good clientele and traveled to different private gyms and homes. After using everyone else’s private gyms and paying their fees, I started thinking, what if I had my own studio?
I managed a Golds gym for a while to get more knowledge of how to run a gym on the back end. It was a learning experience but hated it, especially the corporate 9-5 life and the BS that came with corporate gyms.
In 2017 I got out and made a huge jump and bought into a franchise, Fit Body Bootcamp. After being in a franchise for a couple of years, I noticed a lot of bad things going on within the franchise. With the encouragement from my family, friends and my members, I made the biggest jump, got out of the franchise and stared my very own Bootcamp, now known as AR Fitness Factory.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely was not a smooth road. There were those times when I first moved to LA that I didn’t think it was for me. I was tired of working all the time and missing social events. When I started doing training at Crunch, I didn’t have a lot of clients which meant I didn’t make money. Going private wasn’t easy either with money always fluctuating, it was stressful. I’m truly blessed to have the support I have from my girlfriend and didn’t turn her back on me when it was really hard.
The stress of owning my own studio was more than I ever thought it would be. I had to deal with all the business aspects, not just training. I had to deal with people trying to scam the business, trying to take advantage of me being a small business owner and not a corporation so it was easy to cut them deals. It’s hard and stressful knowing that I need to have a great program and not just get new members but keep them. There have been so many times that I wanted to quit but I knew I couldn’t give up on myself or my staff and athletes.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be the sleepovers with all my cousins. I have a huge family, so when we all get together, playing games, cracking jokes and just being a loving family, those were the best times.
