Meet Arit Barrow of LaVeras Lens Photography in Mid-Wilshire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arit Barrow.

Arit, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Recently, my camera use has become more intentional. Forcing myself to shoot any and everything. Although I have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Masters in Public Health I have always had a burning desire to do something “more.” Something that fuels my artistic side.

I have always had a camera in my hand; whether it was a disposable camera at sleep away camp, a compact point & shoot while on family vacations, a polaroid to capture candid moments or my DSLR. I have always loved taking pictures and sharing them. My family and friends have always encouraged me to pursue my passion of photography, and of course I have brushed the notion off. That is until “it happened”.

Earlier last month “it happened”. I was fired – no need to sugar coat it. Honestly, I have never been more relieved and thankful in my life. Some days I freak out. Often questioning if going down this path is right for me. Deep down, I know that this was the push I needed because I know I was too chicken shit to take this leap on my own. I am happier. I am able to take better care of my health, express myself, do something I love, and I finally feel free for the first time in a long time – and that is what is MOST important to me.

Although losing my job was the push I needed, I have to give credit to my loved ones (you know who you are <3). Without them, I would not be the person that I am today. They have pushed me to think outside my comfort zone. Encouraged me to go after what I want. Challenged me, supported me, inspired me, picked me up when I was down and most importantly loved me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! This definitely has not been the smoothest road, but I will say it feels natural and just right in an odd way. This first half of the year, I lost three loved ones; as well as my job. This has greatly impacted my creative juice and desire to do anything. Despite the challenges I have faced and will face in the days to come, I remind myself that I am doing this for me and nobody else’s satisfaction.

I am doing this to spark inspiration in others; for the little black girl that comes after me who is doubting herself. I am doing it for my fellow introverts, that are struggling to express themselves and are forcing themselves to follow society’s “path”. I am doing this for that person who needs a sign/reason to go after their dreams. But above all I am doing this for me. To allow myself to be me and do what I love most in this life!

I have to remember to keep my blinders on so I can keep moving forward, ride whatever waves come my way, and most importantly – enjoy the journey. Because in the end, I am in control of the life I want to lead.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LaVeras Lens Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
LaVera’s Lens Photography is named after my late grandmother. She always encouraged me to unapologetically be myself and to do what brings me joy. This is my way of expressing myself. My gift to the world is capturing the beauty in every moment through my lens. I specialize in floral, portrait, and landscape photography. I am proud of my ability to capture the raw beauty of everyday life while staying true to me.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, I am focused on putting all the pieces together. Really letting the world know who LaVera’s Lens Photography is. Which includes creating my brand, expanding client base, showcasing my work, and meeting other photographers. I am looking forward to working with clients from all different backgrounds, creating content that people will want to show off, and eventually travel with my photography.
