Today we’d like to introduce you to Aries Deng.
Aries, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m an Electronic music producer and DJ born in Beijing, China. Moved to Atlanta, and now I’m in Los Angeles. I like video games, Miyazaki’s movies, and xiao long baos. I came from a classical music background and piano is definitely one of my biggest musical influences.
I went to Berklee College of Music and I learned a lot from there. From Jazz to Electronic music, it has helped me grow as a musician. I learned old school DJing (turntablism) and music production. Japanese DJs and producers such as Nujabes and NIFANA have inspired me over the years. As far as current electronic music, Porter Robinson, Madeon, Illenium and all the music with emotional connections are my go to . As for my music, I’m trying to blend the real and digital world, incorporating sounds that bring a very human element to electronic music. The element of feelings, thought, and storytelling.
Just like my recent EP, Unexpected Encounters is a journey of all of the emotions and experiences I went through in the past year. The people that I’ve met, the ups and downs, and is an expression of all of those feelings in music form. I just want to share with people the unexpected events that I came across and hopefully people can relate to it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, there were a lot of challenges from moving to a new city, to getting stuck on completing a song. A lot of times I don’t think my music is good enough to show people, and other times I don’t even feel like writing any music.
However, at the end of the day, I still love making music, expressing myself through music. Of course there is going to be ups and downs. I just grew stronger and learned how to deal with it better.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Beijing born producer/DJ Aries Deng is always seeking ways to express herself through music. Coming from a traditional turntable DJ background and classical piano training, her uplifting sound is grounded in future bass with influences from her experiences of living in the city, video games, and anime.
Inspired by different interactions and encounters that have made an impact on her, she translates those events into a sonic adventure to convey the feelings she had at that time as she creates music. Emotions have always been a key factor in Aries’ music, performances, and everything she represents.
Aries has performed at the hottest clubs and venues locally and internationally, such as Club Royale (Boston), House of Blues (Boston), The New Parish (San Francisco), Club Latte (Beijing), NASA (Chengdu, China) and more.
She also has performed at music festivals and events like the BMW and MINI COOPER North America launch party, New England CollegeFest, Far True Music Fest (New York), MUSMOD CON (Nashville), one of the biggest EDM festivals in China – STORM Music Festival (Shenzhen), as well as one the the biggest events in North America: ANIME EXPO (Los Angeles), at which 100,000+ people have attended. Aries is always looking for a place to share her musical and visual experience with others.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have done anything differently. Everything I do, every decision I made is what has led me here. Even if I made mistakes, I learned from them and just keep moving forward, always.
