Today we’d like to introduce you to Arianna Montazem.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Arianna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in the Bay Area & grew up in the Central Valley. I was always drawn to the beauty industry, doing hair and makeup for my friends and family for events they had. I went to cosmetology school at night while I was a senior in high school. I originally wanted to do hair and makeup for movies! And then, boom! Lash extensions started becoming super popular. My mom is actually the reason I am doing lashes now. She had been getting them for a few years and said to me one day, “you’d be good at this, I think you should get certified.” She then signed me up for the class AND made me pay for it myself. At 20, it was the most I’d ever spent on anything and I was so nervous it wouldn’t work out and I’d waste it. But, moms are always right aren’t they? I got certified with Novalash in February of 2013, and in June 2013 I packed up my car and moved to LA with $700 and no place to live.
Luckily, my cousin let me crash with her for a few months while I figured it all out. I bounced around to a few different salons before decided to go out on my own. I drove all around LA doing house calls for the small clientele I did have and using social media to build more. My publicist, Alyssa Baker of Riot Media Group, linked me with different influencers to get my name out there. During this time, I was also looking for a salon to call home. I was SO nervous. Scared of failing, that I wouldn’t be able to afford it, anything bad. My mentor & celebrity hairstylist, Verlyn Antoine, gave me the best advice, “If you build it, they will come.” And in January of 2015, I found Phenix Salon Suites, I called and toured and put down a deposit. In April, I was officially a small business owner and up and running! It’s definitely not easy, I still have challenges, but I’m constantly learning and that’s what it’s all about. And now five years later, I’ve worked with some of the biggest names in the business, Halsey, Normani, Sharon Stone, social media influencers, models, music videos, movies, and ad campaigns.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the first two years, I was living in LA, I had worked at two different salons. Unfortunately, the second salon just wasn’t a good fit and the owner decided to move in a different direction and not have a lash artist. I had also just been through a breakup, so the combination was very overwhelming and I even considered moving back to Stockton. I called my mom saying “I think I need to come home” and she said “well, you can always come home.. but I don’t know where you’ll live because you can’t live here, you’re an adult now!” At first, I was like wow really?? But that tough love was what I needed. I was trying to give up, and that is not like me at all.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a master lash artist and educator. I am 4x certified by some of the best in the lash industry. I think what I’m best known for and what also sets me apart, would be my eye for detail and being able to offer custom sets for each individual client. No two clients of mine have the same exact set, because no two clients have the same eye shape. I take every detail of a client’s eyes into consideration when doing a full set of lashes. From how close or far apart a client’s eyes are, to the space between the lash line and eyebrow.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
When I first started doing lashes, I thought it would be just a fad. However, I think it’s here to stay! It’s hard to say where it’ll go as far as trends go because I feel like beauty and fashion go hand in hand, beauty tends to follow the fashion trends.
