Meet April Hicks of April Blooms Boutique in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Hicks.

April, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In my very early years, I worked as a hair stylist in local salons. Great experiences and mentoring opportunities resulted in the eventual ownership of my own salon, Head Trip, which has been going strong for 22 years now.

A soft introduction of jewelry and eventually clothing in a dedicated space within the salon were organic additions. Next, I participated as a vendor at various festivals and shows, and the receptivity of both efforts, coupled with the vacancy of the space adjacent to the hair salon, led to the birth of April Blooms Boutique.

Has it been a smooth road?
We are a very new, and not located in any of the main shopping districts. This has been a challenge as we continue to work on becoming known outside of our initial support base. I realize that all new businesses take time to grow, as was the case with my hair salon, so I am optimistic that once people know about us, they can consider us as an option.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
It is a privilege to have the opportunity to touch the lives of others in a meaningful way. I love that I get to do this as the founder and owner of April Blooms Boutique.

We offer women’s clothing and accessories where all items are handpicked by me from locally sourced artists who offer Made in LA, California or U.S. creations. We cater to all sizes, from extra-small to 3X, with most items not found in big retailers, yet they are fun, fashionable, affordable, and comfortable pieces that support the busy lifestyle of today’s always-on-the-go woman.

I want to inspire others, and especially encourage women to look and feel their best. As a decades-long owner of a successful hair salon (Head Trip), which I still run today, I know how gratifying it is for a woman to have her hair styled. It changes her whole demeanor. I believe the same positive outcome applies to fashion, in the sense that when a woman feels put together and confident, her unique beauty is on display for all to see.

I love going to shows and the mart to find garments. There may be a hundred items, and I may only select one, yet when it becomes an instant best seller, it’s affirming, and we all need that.

I have experienced a newfound joy with April Blooms Boutique – the gratifying feeling of helping others be their best.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As a lifelong resident, I’ve watched Pasadena evolve through the years from mostly Mom and Pop brick-and-mortar businesses to many big name retailers. The growth has provided the ability for many local improvements to the area that makes Pasadena a desirable place to live, work and play.

I have enjoyed success as a local business owner for 22 years, first with Head Trip hair salon, and I am optimistic about April Blooms Boutique as well. Pasadena is a very cozy place with lots of restaurants, museums, the Huntington Library and Gardens. It is very arts-driven, and people who enjoy the arts, typically tend to like boutiques, such as mine. I am excited about the possibilities.
