Meet Apollo Davar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Apollo Davar.

Apollo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I first started rapping I was in high school. I would watch battle rap competitions and videos on BET. At this time I was already a good writer and that really helped me when I first started. In order to understand where my talent for music comes from you have to first look back to the beginning where it all started. I didn’t have the worst childhood but I grew up with divorced parents and was around people who would often abuse drugs. I’ve witnessed abuse and struggled for years to cope with the realities of my torn childhood. Music gave me an outlet to be able to express the pains I felt. Coming from a hard background I often got into trouble at school and ended up wasting 5 years of my life on probation for a petty marijuana charge. Everything changed for me when I put words to the mic it gave me a purpose to share my craft with others. That’s why every time I make a song I either try to give people a good vibe or make them think about things going on in society. I feel being an independent artist helps me to freely express myself to give a wider impact on people’s lives. My music is for anyone who has ever struggled with anything. It can be something that lifts you up or something that turns you up. Either way, I make music for those of us who have been constantly looked over and slept on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a tough road for me from getting arrested for selling marijuana to the issues I faced at home. I spent five years pissed off because I felt my punishment never fit the crime. The one thing I learned is that when tough times come keep pushing through because there is a light at the end of the tunnel, Witnessing abuse and being around drugs all the time really changed my mindset about how I see things in life. You can say it made me thick-skinned and numb to things going on around me. A lot of people didn’t understand the trauma going around so I was often misunderstood. This helped me to have confidence in music because I blocked out all the hate.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a rapper known for my lyricism and realism. I talk about things I see or things that I have been through. If it never happened I do not rap about it. Music to me should be an expression of life whether you are feeling happy, sad, or just want to turn up. It helps as an outlet to describe the situations I have faced before. Whenever I hear a dope beat it takes me to a place that’s indescribable. What sets me apart is the fact that I take my music very seriously, I don’t want to be like every other artist that is not authentic. I do not rap like anyone else because I have adopted My own style with a very diverse flow. I can rap to any beat and make it my own. I’m proud of each of my songs that come out because of the effort I put into them. It gives me a sense of purpose to create new music for my audience.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those people who want to get into being an artist, you have to remember to stay consistent. Consistency is key to success. You have to always put 100 percent effort because if you don’t there is always someone else wanting to take your spot. Also, you have to be yourself don’t try to steal anyone else’s style because authenticity will take you farther than riding trends. Something I wish I knew when starting out was to never get free beats and to try to find your own producer. The reason for this is because you want to own all your masters and exclusive rights to your songs, that way you reap the benefits of all your royalties. This is key to making the profit that you deserve for the hard work you put in.
