Meet Anthony Rollins of SketchFire Studios in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Rollins.

Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in LA. I currently live in Downey, CA with my wife Perla and two kids Brianna and Jayden. As a child, I loved cartoons and movies. It inspired me to try to create my own world through self-made comic books and coloring books for my little brothers. As I grew older, my love for creating art had been taking over for my love for Basketball. I thought I was going to be a basketball player so I focused more on that. Right out of High school I went to Cal State Long Beach with the intent to try out for the basketball team. I soon decided not to try out due to the fact that I was about to have a kid. Do to the hardships of having a child as a teen while juggling work and school at the same time I was kicked out of Cal State Long Beach. After that, I decided to work full time instead.

While working full time at a dead end job I quickly realized this wasn’t for me. I still had that strong love for drawing cartoons so I decided to go to The Art Institute. There I realized that doing art was my true calling the whole time. During my time at the Art Institute, I interned for Titmouse animation studio where I worked on the show “Black Dynamite”. That internship leads me to my first animation job at a studio named “ADHD” At that studio, I worked on shows “Axe Cop”, “Golan the Insatiable”, and Major Lazer. From there I worked on shows for various different shows. Shows for FOX, Adult Swim, and Netflix just to name a few. I am currently working for Bento Box studios on an unreleased Netflix show while also working on my own animation studio “SketchFire Studios”.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think my biggest obstacle not having a stable place to live, juggling school and work all while raising two kids. I slept on many couches and ate plenty bowls of Top Ramen. Fortunately, with the love and support from my Queen I was able to overcome those obstacles.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SketchFire Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Storyboard Artist at Bento Box at the moment. I specialize in Storyboarding and Animation. I am currently working on creating my own animation business with two of my colleagues Christopher Wallace and Justin Polley. We decided to try to create our own animation studio due to the fact that we didn’t really see too many cartoons starring characters that look like us. It is our goal to try to change that!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Of course, there will be a big shift in animation over the next 5-10 years, the animation world is always changing. I just hope that the change is creating more stories about cultures that we never seen before. There are a lot more stories out there to be told, I hope we get the chance to see and hear them.
