Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Abdelmalek.
Anthony, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The idea behind Stitch Design is to be that resource connecting people’s ideas to tangible things – I saw too many of my friends and colleagues have great ideas but not understand the steps it takes to make a physical product. I grew up in Oregon and have lived and spent many years in the outdoor and active sports industry, but living and working in China for 15+ years helped me expand my knowledge of design, development, and manufacturing when it comes to a wide variety of products. I’ve worked on sports equipment, beauty tools, snowboard gear, shoes, furniture, portable power and solar, accessories, Bluetooth outdoor speakers, headphones, and earbuds, as well as other consumer electronics and consumer products. I not only am able to design and develop someone’s product functionally and aesthetically, but I can take it to the next step and connect them to manufacturers, get them through the process of negotiating costs and tweaking their products, trying different manufacturing techniques, and producing the product for them to sell.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since I spent years making connections and meeting many different manufacturers along the way, I had a really good base to start with when it comes to clients’ projects. So in that way, yes, those parts can be smooth. But the tricky part can be navigating the factories- there is always going to be a hiccup in manufacturing where a part needs to get re-designed, or there are delays from a vendor to get the right color, or maybe an unseen issue with the capabilities of the factory. Luckily, I can problem-solve around any issue and sometimes those hiccups can lead to even greater results.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Stitch Design is an all-inclusive design to manufacturing consultancy, right here in sunny Los Angeles. We help all types of clients take their idea to an actual product when they typically don’t have the means to do so. What sets Stitch Design apart is that we don’t have clients, we have partners. We really invest in their ideas and believe in them- we want to help them build their idea into a viable business. For example, some design consultancies usually will only create your design and pass it back to you for you to go out and get it made. Then, when there is a problem with manufacturing and you go back to them, they will slap you with another big invoice for the changes- this cycle can go on for a while. We want to work with you from inception to delivery, not leave you high and dry with half of a project done. On a project to project basis, we even consider sweat equity over cash payments, if need be. We want your project and idea to succeed.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up outside of Portland, Oregon, and was definitely the kid that took all my dad’s power tools apart just to put them back together. I loved skateboarding, surfing, biking, snowboarding, skiing- everything outdoors and active. After high school, I found myself wanting to do creative projects, like making furniture, fashion design, and even designing the interiors of a skateboard shop. I’ve been doing photography my whole life, and then I stumbled upon Industrial Design and decided to go back to school for this, where I got my degree at The Art Institute.
