Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Muller.
Anne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The Card Tricks Designs story began when we were getting married… we were stunned to realize “custom” wedding invitations meant choosing white or BE BOLD go with ivory paper, roman or BE CRAZY a script font. That was it! As a graphic designer and writer who were used to expressing ourselves, the options didn’t seem to express anything about us. So, we created our own.
And with our wedding – and an award-winning wedding invitation under our belt – we partnered up to create Card Tricks Designs out to help other nontraditional folks create one-of-a-kind invitations to celebrate their one-of-a-kind lives.
Over the years we have appeared in numerous design and event magazines as well as a few tv event show spots but mostly our work comes through word of mouth. We’ve designed offbeat, extraordinary invitations for countless events and a wide range of clients—from scuba divers “taking the plunge” to a hockey player’s bar mitzvah, a light-up, singing “Viva Las Vegas” celebration and Hugh Jackman’s birthday bash! High-profile fundraising galas, all kinds of corporate events, including the award-winning Ruinart Champagne Croquet Event and so much more. Each Card Tricks invitation is an original work of art starting with the client’s inspiration; then we develop, refine and handcraft them from start to finish. The result: invitations as fabulous as your event… creating excitement from the moment they arrive.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenge has been that more people are getting into the business – individuals using design programs on computers as well as digital businesses like evite and Vista Print. Their products are very different from what we do, but they still impact the market. There’s also more people taking a diy approach, which as an artist I understand. This is especially true since Pinterest came on the scene.
Please tell us about Card Tricks Designs.
I think what sets us apart is as our tag line says, we really try to “push the envelope”. If you look through our website cardtricksdesigns.com, you’ll see design solutions that are beyond the obvious. Always trying to challenge ourselves to coming up with the unexpected. So often our clients have the same comment “How did you think of that?” and “We never expected so many people to show up”. (A great invitation! A great party!)
I’m most proud when designs just click! yes! that’s it!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
While visiting a family friend who was staying at The Bel Air Hotel, me and my brother got to go swimming with the Rolling Stones! Riding horses with friends in the hills of Griffith Park and finding huge toads among the cattails and reeds of the LA River.
