Meet Anna Jaques of Nicety Studio in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Jaques.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Anna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I run a luxury wedding invitation design and hot foil studio based in Long Beach, CA. I studied Graphic Design at university in England, where I moved from in August 2019! My parents, grandfather, and sister are graphic designers (my brother, the odd one out, is an illustrator!), so I grew up in a very creative atmosphere.

After graduating, I moved to London and worked as a graphic designer in the luxury retail industry for brands like De Beers, Graff Diamonds, Selfridges, and more. The design studio I started my career at focused mostly on print design (such as brochures and invitations, and also large format in-store campaigns), so I was very hands-on and gained a strong understanding of papers and luxury printing techniques.

In 2017, I got married to my husband and of course, designed my own wedding invitations! I always knew I wanted to start my own design studio, and after receiving interest in my own invitations, I thought this would be a great industry to get into. I loved designing invitations, and the idea of creating a piece of printed work from ideation right through to print production really appealed to me. That’s when Nicety Studio was born!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a constant learning experience since I began my studio. Originally, I didn’t own any printing equipment and designed a line of semi-customizable wedding invitations that were essentially too expensive to produce (I think I was perhaps a little too used to larger luxury retail budgets!).

Once I revised the designs and bought my foil press, work starting pouring in a lot faster. It’s still difficult, especially with COVID19 and weddings being postponed to 2021, but I remain positive that next year will be the best year yet!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nicety Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner of Nicety Studio, and I design wedding invitations for modern couples that have a love for design and typography. My designs are typically typographically focused. Type is something I’ve always been passionate about, I believe it can have a personality and illustrate a story.

I also do my own printing, currently on my hot foil press but I’ll be adding a letterpress very soon, which I’m super excited about! I think the fact that I design and produce everything in-house and am passionate about my designs and process is what sets me apart from others. Being in control of the design and printing allows me to ensure everything is produced at a very high quality.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a big believer in luck! I’ve worked really really hard to get where I am, but the fact that I was born into a family of designers, of course I contribute this to luck!

One extremely (crazy) lucky story was actually my university course interview. I was speaking to my interviewer (one of the graphic design course leaders) about one of the projects I’d completed for the interview. I was telling her that the inspiration of this particular project came from a book my dad had passed on to me to read. My interviewer then let me know that this book (Pioneers of Modern Typography) was written by her father! If that’s not luck, I don’t know what is!
