Meet Anna Cantwell of Mind Tribes in East LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Cantwell.

Anna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Yoga saved me–from chronic pain, from crippling stress, from anxiety, and from becoming too busy to care for my own basic needs. College drove me to yoga, and when I became a high school English teacher, I found myself crawling into bed after 14-hour days and a yoga class, working Saturday & Sunday, and earning my master’s degree on nights and weekends.

I knew there had to be a better way to live–a way to pursue my passions and contribute to the world without sacrificing my health & happiness. I was connected to Dan & Cristina Houston, founders of Mind Tribes, through a yoga teacher at my school, who taught yoga to students throughout the day. I signed up for their yoga teacher training–along with 19 other school teachers, counselors, and public servants–and it transformed my whole self.

I gained a new way of seeing the world, tools to use for the mind, language, and body, and my 200-hour RYT certification, influenced by styles including Vinyasa, Forrest, and Pralaya. Now, I teach yoga & meditation through the LA area (and California), in offices, at studios, and in schools–to both students and teachers, and as an affiliate of Mind Tribes, I support our yoga teacher trainings and mindful leadership development.

Has it been a smooth road?
Moving to LA was an undertaking–I left the day after I graduated from yoga teacher training and didn’t look back. There was the sleeping on couches and staying with cousins–the being in flux that creates instability. Not to mention it has been utterly terrifying! Each day I’m facing new fears that take my practice, my work, and my personal growth to new levels. The simplest challenge is that when your life and work is flexible and you create it, that leaves room for chaos, so handling chaos is a great challenge!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The mission of Mind Tribes is to pull you to stay uncomfortable and hungry for growth, such that you experience a quantum leap in results. We empower and move people to create their own personal template for life and such that they reach their fullest and most fulfilling expression of success, health, and wealth. We are grounded in the principles of yoga and mindfulness, and our aim is to create tribes of mindful leaders globally so that people can live freely.

We offer 200-hour yoga teacher trainings, mindful leadership training and retreats, and coaching programs. I’m most proud that we offer public servants scholarships for our trainings and work with people that are incarcerated. Our work resides in both the practical–tools, structures, and practices–as well as the visionary.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is the perfect place for Mind Tribes! While many are familiar with yoga, few have explored its relationship off the mat and mindfulness in other areas of life. Despite the reputation as a yoga Mecca of sorts, so many people in this city struggle to slow down and create with intention.

We believe if you are sacrificing your own mental, physical, or social wellbeing to achieve your highest vision, you’ve missed the mark. Step one starts with the body and movement! LA can take a hike, go for a stroll, or instead of losing your cool in traffic, try a few deep belly breaths.
