Meet Angelique Calvillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Calvillo.

Angelique, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up with a music studio in my backyard – literally! My parents are both musicians and built a beautiful boutique studio behind our house. When producers needed little kid’s voices, they’d call my sisters and I. My first professional session was at six years old!

At ten years old, I learned how to arrange three – part harmony and it all expanded from there.

At 14, I became heavily involved in the music industry alongside my two sisters. As “Calvillo Sisters” we went through many trials and adventures being signed to Interscope, dropped from Interscope, moving to Nashville, moving back to LA, releasing multiple albums along the way.

And somewhere along that path, I learned to produce my own music. To rephrase that more honestly: when I became fed-up with other people telling me how I was going to sound, I learned how to do it myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not! There have been countless cul-de-sacs, wild goose chases, and disappointments. Did I return from my own hero’s journey with the elixir? Yes. And the elixir that I seized was my own holy grail; the ability to produce my own music coupled with a deep, driving passion to encourage other women to do the same.

I’ve always had ideas about production ever since I was a little girl. However, I have an overwhelming amount of memories of feeling shut down in the studio room. Every single producer I worked with was a middle – aged man and not too concerned with my opinion.

Besides feeling overpowered, I didn’t speak the language. I didn’t have the technical vocabulary to say “that’s too much compression” or “the EQ on the drums is creating distortion in the mix.”

So starting at age 19, I learned ProTools, Logic, and music theory. I got a Bachelor of Science in Music Production from Full Sail University.

The truth that I always felt about the music, I now had the vernacular to say. I empowered myself with knowledge.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am now a full-time music producer, session singer, and artist. I can carve out a session vocal, provide fresh, full-scale music production, paint on some background vocals, and even score films.

What sets me apart from other producers or scoring artists is precisely what made me insecure for so long: the fact that I’m coming from a vocal background.

My session singing career began at six and has developed into a life – long obsession. All of my meticulous, perfectionist energy goes into my vocal sessions and vocal comps.

I am also recognized for my creativity with background vocals (or as I like to call them “fairy voices.”) I enjoy layering lots of voices in everything since that’s how I started off, sitting on the floor with my sisters arranging harmony together.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am an Angeleno through and through and one of the very few natives with deep roots here.

I love LA and I feel really privileged to have grown up here. Being involved so heavily in the industry starting at 14 would not have been possible if my family wasn’t living here.

If you believe as I do that your vibe attracts your tribe, you know that every city can make space for you. (I learned this when I moved to Nashville.)

For me, there’s no place like home.
