Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The beginning of my journey creating A.Hill Creations begins with the decline of my physical health at 13 years old. Due to my physical ailments I was in and out of the hospital throughout middle school and high school, not always feeling confident/beautiful in my own skin. My mother would always tell me, “when you don’t feel good always take the time to look good. You always feel a little better when you think you look good.” Which in turn led me to always make sure to feel beautiful in those darker days. Going through such difficult times at a young age led me to pursue a career in behavioral health. At which point, I learned that art is a necessary form of therapy. Throughout all of this experience of my mantra, and background in behavioral health, I dreamt of my own online boutique of femme/womxn owned products which not only aligns with my mother’s mantra and use of art as therapy but also my feminists views of owning a boutique that will help uplift womxn by supporting their entrepreneurial endeavors as well.
I also wanted to make sure I had quality items that would make the wearer feel good about themselves when wearing them. Although some of my earrings are bigger, I try to stick to simple designs as to accentuate the wearers beauty rather than ‘steal the show.’ When creating a new style I always focus on what my mother would tell me and try to bring that energy into a new design. I hope that every time a customer puts on some jewelry from A.Hill Creations their confidence lifts even if its just the slightest amount. As far as where I am now, I am still in the very beginning phase, but partnering with womxn run organizations/companies has definitely assisted me to getting to where I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road is just getting started so it is difficult to say if it will be smooth. So far the biggest struggle I have faced has been self-doubt. There are still days where I think “who am I to make this really take off?” but then I have to remind myself that growing a business is the same as personal growth. It takes a lot of work and times of discomfort, and more often than not it’s difficult to see growth within the short-term scope, but just as I look back and see how much I have grown into the woman I am now and am grateful for putting in the work for personal growth when I felt like I was going nowhere, I know I will feel the same about my business when I look back to this moment years from now.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with A.Hill Creations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
A.hill creations is an all-inclusive jewelry line that is meant to make a statement and accentuate feminine beauty. Due to my views on woman empowerment and building up communities of color, I have chosen to partner with people and organizations that align with these beliefs. I have currently worked with members of Af3irm Los Angeles which is a grassroots organization of radical feminists, as well as YonVilaj of the Bronx whose focus is on raising up their community. By working with these organizations, I am able to assist by donating a portion of the proceeds to these organizations.
I specialize in wood and acrylic jewelry. All of the pieces are given women’s names to stick with the theme of a womxn focused brand. My company is most known for having customized pieces. Being that all of the wood/acrylic is laser cut from plain sheets, each design is thoroughly planned out starting with a simple sketch, then precisely input into a design software to be cut/engraved into wood/acrylic and then assembled into each item I sell. I think the ability to customize designs and partner with individuals or companies/organizations to create new styles at an affordable price point sets A.Hill Creations apart from other jewelers.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have plans to grow my business in a few directions. First and foremost, I am working on expanding my personal brand and getting my jewelry carried in brick and mortar boutiques throughout the Los Angeles Metro Area. I also look forward to partnering with more organizations to create new lines for a good cause. With the revenue from these sources of income, I will then expand my website into an online boutique carrying other artisans work as well.
*I use the spelling womxn rather than women as an inclusive title to encompass transgender, women of color, femme/feminine-identifying, gender-queer and non-binary people.
