Meet Angel Muro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Muro.

Angel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Drawing has always been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember, growing up so close to the mountains and always being outside playing with bugs really seemed to influence the sort of artwork that I enjoyed making. This along with popular tv shows at the time like “Pokémon” and later on down the line, Heavy Metal music also made their way in my drawings and paintings. All of these different hobbies of mine all seemed to culminate into me sketching weird monsters, and naturally, monsters live in dark creepy forests, so I drew my fair share of those as well. This hobby continued on until some point in college when I decided that I didn’t really want to do IT work and decided to pursue a career in illustration which I figured would be a bit more exciting than figuring out network configurations or helping out people over the phone who can’t figure out how to plug in a flash drive. So I decided to take a chance and go to school at ArtCenter College of Design which seems to have panned out alright since I have recently graduated in December and had a successful graduation show!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While it wasn’t necessarily a smooth road, I’m happy to say that I never faced any real external obstacles because I always had a roof over my head and a great support group of friends and family. However, I definitely faced some internal obstacles in my early twenties that were heavily based on fear and doubt. I was afraid that I would never be rid of my anxiety and a pervasive sense of hopelessness, I was afraid that my dreams and hopes would never really become a reality, and I doubted what I was capable of. It took me a few years, but at some point I finally worked through it when I realized that fear was the only thing that was really keeping me down.

Please tell us more about your art.
I am an Illustrator and Concept Artist.

I’ve done freelance illustration work for trading card games, album covers, and have done concept artwork for the theming industry.

I personally love painting monsters, landscapes, and backgrounds so my next goal is to land a job working in a studio for the gaming industry or for film!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It’s a bit hard to say what I would have done differently because all of the lessons I’ve learned from the mistakes that I’ve made along the way have turned me into who I am today, and I’m pretty happy with the person I’ve turned out to be.

But if I had to choose…

I think I would take back the time I was asked, “How would you like your steak?” and I absent-mindedly answered “cooked.”

I’m still trying to live that one down.
