Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Lee.
Andy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in such an understanding family really allowed me to explore different career paths and dreams. I always had a keen sense when it came to analyzing a film’s story, characters, and tone. I developed and honed these skills during the weekends where I would watch various films with my dad. Over time, this translated into expressing my creativity through photography and not before long to motion pictures.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I began to dig deeper into the career path of directing and filmmaking, I soon realized that the recognition and praise that is acknowledged by the public is near impossible to acquire without a good sense of direction and creativity. For years, I fell in a state of self-pity and a complete creative drain. During this time, I began opening myself to different career options that would allow full security. However, I soon came to a realization that the risks and challenges that come with this field is what excites and thrills me.
Please tell us about Gooks.
GOOKS is a company that my partner and I decided to create in the midst of declined Asian representation in the entertainment industry. Allowing ourselves to acknowledge these stereotypes and discrimination makes creating high-quality visuals more compelling. As an underdog in this field, we expect to use those disadvantages to our advantage when producing music videos, documentary series, and short films. Although the company is still in the early stages of development, we specialize in creating unique, story-driven music videos with an aesthetic that many do not utilize in this space. We want our company to pave the way for new artists that can make an impact in this world with the same ideologies as us.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My partner AJ Kang is my second half when it comes to the achievements I’ve accomplished so far. As my main cinematographer, he has a natural talent for certain aspects of film that I can only dream to acquire. We have a chemistry that is unmatched and will soon be recognized in the products we put out.
