Meet Andy Fernandez of LAB

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Fernandez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
LAB, which stands for Los Angeles Bound – is a screen printing, graphic design, and creative space in the LA area. Our vision is to be exposed to all kinds of art forms by working with many talented individuals locally and around the world. Our goal is to travel around the world to gain inspiration from culture and people while still keeping in touch with our roots here in Los Angeles, because no matter where we go, we will always be Los Angeles Bound.

My passion started while studying architecture and design in college. I began to teach myself the medium of screen printing to create my own shirts. What started as a hobby soon became a business once I realized family and friends were always in need of my skills. Before moving into our current location, I started my business at home in my garage. During this time I also worked with my father part-time helping him with his automotive business. As I started to expand my business, I soon realized I could make it my full-time job.

When it was time to find the new home for LAB, I wanted to make sure we had a big enough space to allow for our creativity to take flight and invite all artists to take part in this creative space. We soon found a building in a commercial location in the city of South El Monte that allowed us to do just that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Just like any business, it has definitely not been a smooth road. There have been many obstacles along the journey with managing your own business, staying positive and not giving up. It has probably been one of the scariest things I have ever done, but like they say, “Happiness is on the other side of fear.”

I remember asking my dad what his thoughts were of me starting a business. He responded by saying, “What is holding you back?” Right there I knew I should just jump! I had nothing to lose, and I had the full support of my family and friends.

I come from a family who are entrepreneurs and business owners, risk takers and dream chasers. It was no surprise that I would follow in their footsteps. I’m glad I never gave up because this has been my dream!

Please tell us about LAB.
LAB’s foundation specializes in screen printing, embroidery, and graphic designing.

What sets us apart from other print shops is our unique creative workspace imagined and designed by me with the help of several creative minds. My passion for art and architecture helped create a fun and colorful environment in which we now use as a backdrop to many events.

We want our clients to walk in our shop and immediately become inspired by the environment we have created here at LAB. Although we know we have a great space, we are always flattered when new people/clients come to LAB to see the space for themselves and when friends call it their second home.

We are proud of what we have created, and we hope we can continue to share our creativity with others.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would’ve taken more business courses in college. My college career was mostly in the arts field. However, as I progress through the growth of my business, I keep learning every day.
