Meet Andrew Toma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Toma.

Andrew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated high school when I was 16 and was working in a photography studio, the photographer needed a makeup artist, I picked up a brush and I never wanted to put it down, Although I was horrible, I still enjoyed the challenge.

When I was 21 I picked up and moved to New York. I practiced my trade and really soaked up all the tricks from the talented people around me. I was mentored by some incredible artists and soon after worked New York Fashion Week.

After 2 years, I moved to LA where I started working with Rachel Zoe, Jen Atkins, and Joy Lenz. I was traveling for weeks at a time with my clients for events including Miami Art Basil and throughout Europe for London, Paris and Milan Fashion Week.

Currently, the majority of my work takes place in Los Angeles specializing in photo shoots and red carpet. I am signed with Vision Nation Artists.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a makeup especially freelance can be difficult and the market is saturated, The most important thing was to not pay attention to what other people are doing and focus on myself. My Instagram has really helped me gain clients and for them to trust me and my craft.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a makeup artist with a background in Fashion design and styling. I really love clothes and I love collaborating with stylists to create an amazing final look. Having 12 years experience, I feel this has really given me great experience with different skin tones, types, and all ages.

I enjoy pushing and challenging myself… I also try to create a great team environment, when you have a great dynamic with everyone the outcome will be much better.

I also team up with brands that I truly love their products such as Kohgendo, Urban Decay, Laura Mercier, Too faced, Milk Makeup, and Anastasia Beverly Hills.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Kansas City, both of my parents are Immigrants. My father is from Egypt and my mother is from Ukraine. I love different cultures and I thrive with clients of different backgrounds.

I grew up laughing, I am probably the biggest jokester of all my friends. if you see me in LA, I’m either on Melrose or Beverly Hills shopping or I am hiking. I am also the biggest moviegoer ever. I always go to Ipic in Westwood. I love that place, wined and dined while watching a movie (especially previews). That’s my thing.
