Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Tang.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I discovered my passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at a very young age. My passion was profoundly influenced by my father, a doctor who has been practicing TCM for more than 30 years in Taiwan. TCM has evolved over thousands of years and was built on the foundation of Holism.
I was born premature. Within the first week of my birth, my parents were notified at least three times of my critical condition. I had fever over 101 F for over one month. My immune system was so weak that I got sick very easily.
My father prescribed a special herbal formula to strengthen my immune system. Every day, my mother gave me the herbs that my father specially formulated for me, ignoring the cost of the expensive herbs used in the special formula. I eventually grew up to be strong and tall; I am 10 inches taller than my father and 15 inches than my mother.
I completed my bachelor’s degree at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China and had earned multiple Awards of Excellence. After completing my Ph.D. in Southern California, I started my clinic in Fullerton, California to help more patients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most of people do not realize that TCM can do a lot more than just treating pain syndromes. Therapies under TCM encompass acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure/massage, cupping and moxibustion…etc. TCM can be particularly effective for complex diseases with multiple causes, including metabolic diseases, chronic and degenerative conditions (such as knee arthritis) and age-related diseases. TCM herbal formulas are also used to treat allergy, asthma, common cold, digestive complaints, menstrual problems, emotional disorders, neuropathy…etc. It is not always easy to explain how the TCM works to a new patient. However, facts speak louder than words. The patients have become convinced, after seeing improvements.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SYNERGiE Holistic Medicine & Prevention – what should we know?
SYNERGiE Holistic Medicine & Prevention’s mission is not only to cure or relieve patients’ symptoms of medical conditions or illnesses as soon as naturally possible, but also to share the philosophy of Holistic Medicine. In Holistic Medicine, we believe that various functions of our body work synergistically to create the balance of health, hence the name, SYNERGiE. We believe that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Thus, we strive to tailor to patients’ individual needs by providing therapies of acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure/massage, cupping and moxibustion accordingly.
We also love to share simple, easy-to-do health tips for people to improve their health and to prevent illnesses. Many of these tips are commonly known in Easter cultures, e.g. do not drink iced water, always blow dry your hair…etc. It is heart wrenching to see that the value of these simple tips has not been widely recognized.
These small tips have been proven invaluable. Two of our patients, have benefited from our recommendation of having a cup ginger soup each morning. One of them lost inches of bloating off her waist after drinking the ginger soup for a week. Another one lost close to 30 lbs. after drinking the ginger soup each morning for several weeks.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Kelly, is also very passionate about Holistic Medicine. She has supported me in many ways with great patience. She understands that it takes time to build up a practice and it also takes time for the patients to get familiarized with the values of TCM.
Candy, a very dear friend of us, designed our logo and gave us tremendous support on updating the interior of the clinic to echo the core values of SYNERGiE.
Bruce, one of the founding members of Synergy Acupuncture, now SYNERGiE Holistic Medicine & Prevention, once said, “I am very happy and honored that I can help a young man to reach his dream and success.” He was one of the motivations for us to start the clinic and he helped a great deal in the beginning to build up the foundation of this clinic.
My parents and my brother, although they are thousands of miles away, they gave me good recommendations on how to run the clinic.
