Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Benjamin Maldonado.
Andrew Benjamin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Early Project: Born and raised Los Angeles, eclectic guitar player/Singer songwriter and Musicians Institute Graduate. I have been performing, recording & composing since the ripe age of 14. A large part of my musical career was spent with in an original group called “Mad Temple” were from 2009-2015, I toured and played festivals and theaters throughout the southwest US and Northern Mexico. Some notable performances are South Texas RockFest, Texas RockFest, SXSW, Tijuana Taco Fest, Ensenada RockFest, Sunset Strip Music Festival and Make Music Pasadena Festival to name a few; While also being featured on Music Connection Magazines 2013 -2014 “Top 100 Live unsigned Artists & Bands” and having a residency at the once Hollywood House of Blues. While only releasing two music videos and singles, “Animal” (2014) and “What you looking for” (2015) the group was able to find some radio success nationwide. The group parted ways in 2015.
Post Project: I found my self interning at a music label, attempting to find a “secure job” in the music industry. My thought process at the time was to take a safer route, the whole experience really turned me off but made me realize that there was nothing I’d rather do than play music; everyday for the rest of my life.
Becoming a Teacher and Working Musician: Going into Education and starting to pick up top 4o gigs around town, I slowly began to find my footing. After a couple of years of consistency and whole lot of hard work, I really feel like I’ve finally gotten to a place where I have a very firm foundation.
I see big things in 2020, I’m going back to my roots of songwriting and am currently in the studio. I’ll be releasing singles on Spotify throughout the year while also continuing to teach and perform with other artists.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Its all about momentum, there have been so many times where I felt like I was about to fly but would shortly after hit a brick wall. Whether I was dealing with my finances or having a project fall apart etc…
After Mad Temple ended I realized that there wasn’t a whole lot of demand for Hard Rock Guitar Players, even though Rock Guitar is a great foundation, I had kind of become a “one trick pony” so to speak. Getting out of my comfort zone and really immersing myself into funk, jazz and r&b was fun but sometimes very difficult.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am Singer-Songwriter and working guitar player.
I specialize in all things guitar and songwriting, but I’d say where I am most unique is in my live performance. I just love to perform and consider it such a privilege, so I try to share that passion and energy with the band and audience.
What I’m most proud of is my writing my own music, and the people I get to work with.
What sets me apart is my versatility as a musician and energy as a performance. But I think what matters most is my attitude, I just love what I do so much and I think bringing a gracious and positive attitude is crucial. We’re so blessed to do what we do, regardless of profile or status.
Giving your 100% with a smile is everything.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was In love with music. One of my earliest memories is sitting in my living room with my toy guitar watching Slash do a guitar solo in the “November Rain” music video, needless to say I was effected. In Elementary and Middle School, I was really into sports but after receiving a guitar for Christmas in 6th grade, I became obsessed with the instrument and everything Rock n Roll.
I had a hard time expressing myself verbally and just felt very unconfident…music helped me say what I couldn’t and learning guitar was like finding my superpower.
