Meet Andi Kirkegaard of Kirkie Kookies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andi Kirkegaard.

Andi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My cookie journey has been sort of a fast a furious one! I saw a sugar cookie decorating video in early 2017 and was just enamored with it. I got hooked on watching cookie decorating videos and finally got brave enough to try it out for myself! I had NO CLUE what I was doing when I first started, but I do have a strong background in fine art, so I thought “this won’t be SO terrible.”

And it wasn’t! It turned out to be every bit as satisfying as I had hoped it would be and I had so much fun decorating these little cookies! Before I knew it, I had friends and family asking if they could buy cookies from me. I kept stressing that I was not a baker by any means but rather a sugar artist with my cookies as my canvas. The appeal to my cookies is certainly the level of artistic detail I put into them, but I really made a strong effort to make my cookies taste as good as they looked!

After a few trials, I mastered my own sugar cookie recipe and my clients always express how surprised they are with how yummy the cookies are in addition to how beautiful they look! I realized the Universe was trying to tell me something when I was getting inundated with orders and people really seemed to be loving what I was doing! 2017 was a rough year professionally for me and I kept asking for a sign to help me out of my rut.

I wanted to be my own boss, I wanted to make money, I wanted to be creative, and ultimately I wanted to use my talents to give back to the world and make others happy. And lo and behold, sugar cookies have been the key to all of that! In the last year, my little business and my social media following have skyrocketed, and I now am booking cookie orders months in advance.

Coming from a Performing Arts background, I never imagined my life would take this route. However, I am thankful every day that I followed my gut because I’ve found immense validation and happiness in giving back to others and hey- I get to decorate cookies for a living, how cool is that?!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This is a tricky one! My cookies have certainly taken off in ways that I could never have imagined!! I’ve found the growth of my business and social media following to be very organic and a smooth road but personally, I’ve had to overcome quite a few mental roadblocks in getting my cookie business started.

I come from a Performing Arts background and have my degree in Musical Theatre and moved to LA in 2012 to pursue my dreams of being an actress. Like many aspiring actresses out there, I was shocked when I realized the odds stacked against me and it didn’t help that I was certainly not the only tall blonde actress in LA. Now, that’s not to say I didn’t have my fair share of successes- I had some major career highs, but the lows felt oh so very low. They say acting can be feast or famine and in 2017 I was certainly experiencing my famine.

It hit me one day that I was tired of feeling like I had to wait for others to give me permission to shine and experience the success I was so desperately seeking. I started asking the Universe for a sign because I was ready to take control of my own happiness and use my talents to give back and make others happy. When cookies fell in my lap, I couldn’t believe how they took off!

However, it also came with the struggle of accepting that my life was possibly taking a new path. How do you just switch gears when your life’s dream of 20 years is to be an actor? It’s really terrifying! I cope with the fears of letting others down but then I remind myself that anyone that I love is incredibly supportive of whatever I do and they just want to see me happy! And perhaps most important, is that it’s not about anyone else- it’s about me and nurturing my own sense of purpose and happiness.

I have practiced a lot of self-love over the last year to change my own narrative and realize that success for me can come in any career form and that I don’t have to pick between acting OR cookies- I can do both! I found exactly what I was searching for through my cookies- I am my own boss, I am successful, I get to be creative and ultimately I get to use my talents to give back to others. And for now, I am allowing myself to just relax and enjoy the amazing and “sweet” new journey I am on!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is called “Kirkie Kookies.” I just recently got married, and my new last name is “Kirkegaard.” I got the name from my Husband who I lovingly call “Kirkie.” He was always asking me to bake him his own little ‘Kirkie’ cookie, and it just hit me “Kirkie Kookies”- THAT’S IT!!

I specialize in homemade and hand-decorated, artisan sugar cookies for any and all occasions. I think I’m becoming known for how goofy I can be in the kitchen and that I am very down-to-earth and honest when it comes to the process of making my cookies. It’s not always a perfect ride!

I can be a bit messy and silly when making my cookies, but the end result is always top-notch! I think what sets me apart from others is the over-the-top attention to detail I bring to my cookies. I pride myself on being able to use my fine art background of over 20 years and translate that into my cookies! I consider each cookie to be a little canvas and I love bringing my client’s ideas to life in cookie form!

What were you like growing up?
Oh, Lord! I was such a nerd and a MAJOR tomboy, haha! I was always outside playing kickball, digging in the dirt or building tree forts. But when I wasn’t covered in muck, you could always find me being creative in one form or another.

Ever since I can remember, I have always loved to paint and draw and almost always had a colored pencil in my hand. I even remember skipping out on recess in elementary school so I could stay inside and work on my art projects! I was also very outgoing, and a bit of a ham which I suppose lead to my dream of being an actress. 🙂
