Meet Anastasia Bankova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anastasia Bankova.

Anastasia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Russia, I started painting when I was a little kid. All my life I was obsessed with art, but I also loved film. In high school when it was time to choose a profession I was trying to find something what would combine both – art and film and I discovered production design and decided to get into production design program. After four years of studying, I switch to film theory and criticism for various reasons but after graduating, I decided to move to America and pursue my master’s degree in production design as well. I studied at AFI for two years, probably the hardest years of my life.

After graduation, I was completely exhausted and confused about the future and what I wanted to do with my life. I started working on independent projects as a production designer and on union shows as a PA. I hated the last on but working on indy projects hardly paid anything. My last project was a music video for British band Clean Bandit which got 235 million views on YouTube.

After this job, I didn’t take any projects, and on January 1st, 2019 I made a decision to become a real artist. I gave myself a year to find a personal style direction to develop. Magically I started getting commissions, the biggest was for the tv show – they commissioned six big paintings and I made decent amount of money. I realized that painting for shows might be a very good way to go for me – I could still stay connected to film industry but I would paint full time. I was very excited about future and had lots of hopes for this new path.

In February 2019, I went to Russia for a month and got stuck there for eight months because of the visa problems. It was very uncertain time, a limbo. I didn’t know where I live and what I should do next. Last November, I finally came back, concentrated on painting mostly and when pandemic happened, I started working on the online course of abstract painting. That’s my major occupation right now.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had no idea where to start. I was drawing my entire life but didn’t think it could be my career. January 1st, 2019 I told myself that I give myself a year to find my personal style and obtain the feeling I am a real artist.

Please tell us more about your art.
I am really proud of my online course on abstract art. There is not much out there with an academic foundation on abstract art with support of theory but at the same time practical.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would tell myself stop doubting myself.

  • My online course is $50 for just videos and $150 with homework review
