Meet Anaid Gutierrez Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anaid Gutierrez Cruz.

Anaid, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am 31 years old. I was born and raised in Mexico, I moved to the US seven years ago. Since I was a little child, I was interested in arts. I learned how to hold a pencil before I learned how to walk, painting and drawing has been my hobby, therapy, love and passion since I can remember. I started taking professional classes when I was 11 years old and all the way to college. When it was time for high school, I attended to Centro de Education Artistic Diego Rivera. In this place, in addition to the regular subjects, we had a full artistic program, where I learned about all the arts. Dance, theater, fine arts and music.

After the first year whit all the arts the last two years are dedicated to the area of study that the student selects, mine was Fine Arts. Yes, that school was one of the best experiences of my life. But to be admired was very difficult. That school I located in Mexico City it gives out 100 places to test to be admired. Out of those 100 only 25 re-accepted per year. First you must pass general knowledge test, only the best 50 pass. Then those 50 have to attend a full week to school. So the instructors can evaluate if you have potential and talent one admired. After that week, they put out the list of the 25 chosen students.

School in Mexico is no joke, if you cant pass one subject, you must repeat the whole year.

After high school, and getting my Associate’s degree in Fine Arts, I decided to go to college to Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral. Where I was able to blend my original passion with Theater. I feel in love with it while I was in high school. This school just as special as the one before also required a process of admission. They will give out 200 places to admit 30 students per year. Same thing, there will be a general knowledge test you pass that you were to attend one week to school and be evaluated by the instructors. At the end, there was an interview with the whole academy and they determine if your potential, talent and personality meet the requirements. IK got accepted.

There I learned all about design for the performing arts as set design, custom design, lighting design, Makeup design and character design. I started working at the age of 16, in a production company called GARRA, there I did all kinds of things like parades, concerts, circus shows… I worked on the area of makeup, costume, characterization. As I attended school, I worked on different projects. I did makeup, hair and costume for Theater, Opera, commercials, circus and all kinds of performing events. I also used to sell my paintings… still do. I am a single mom of three boys, two of them born in Mexico. Both during my years in College.

On 2012, My family and I went through difficult times due to the well-known violence in Mexico. Being unable to live in Mexico with death threats from the cartel, we had to move to the US on 2013. When I moved here, I didn’t know any English….I started school as soon as I got here. I attended Cinema Makeup School to learn special effects. And started working here as soon as I was able too. Since I had to provide to my two children. I picked up the language pretty quickly. Once I had a permit for work, which was about two years later, I was able to apply for better jobs.

In the US, I’ve done film, commercials, music videos, live demos, character design, photoshoots for clothing, headshots, special effects, lab work, bodypaint.

I got hired at EI on 2015, almost immediately I got my permit. I thought there for five years. I thought theater, film, beauty, hdtv makeup, tech lab. Also designed for the events where the school was to present their live demos. Character design, budgeting, making, training of the students and live demo application at the trade shows. Some of the shows where we did live demos where MONSTERPALOOZA, IMATS, COMICON, SONOFMONSTERPALOOZA, LACOUTYFAIR, DRAGCON, COMICOZY…. Also, I was freelancing and I worked for GLAMSQUAD.

During this time, I had my 3rd child, still a single mom lol… I love being a mother… I love kids. My sons are currently 12, 10 and 4 years old. Since the Pandemic happened, I’ve been dedicating my days to them and to learn/improve my craft but now on the digital work. I am learning 3d modeling on programs like ZBRUSH and developing my portfolio to start a career as a concept artist.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road is always difficult for an artist. Being a woman, a single mother and from a different contrary kind of add to that. But thats what makes this more exciting.

Please tell us more about your art.
I am a freelance artist that is always looking for what new. I am always improving myself. Art is what drives me.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Well… I see myself as a concept artist for a big company. Really is not even about a big company… I see myself doing what I love, sharing my passion with the world on whatever way that might be. But always being honest with myself.
