Meet Amber Rain Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Rain Hernandez.

Amber Rain, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photography has been a passion of mine ever since I was in high school. I used to love taking photos of random subjects, like a can in the middle of the road or a street sign. Over time, I developed a passion of telling love stories through my work.

My very first wedding was in 2012 for my friend Jackie. I remember the joy I experienced knowing that I was a part of someone’s “happily ever after.” Since then, I have photographed countless clients and have come to build long-lasting relationships with many of them. Capturing love stories through photography has become the dream career I never thought I would have.

It’s been a long, challenging and hectic journey, but I finally feel like I am where I need to be.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth. For years, I struggled through college. Finding a balance between working part-time, keeping up with housework, shooting part-time, and going to school full time was not easy. I struggled with depression, anxiety, and self-doubt and it took a toll on me both physically and mentally. There were many times I felt like throwing in the towel all together.

Then a little light came into this world. My beautiful daughter Violet Rose, made her debut on December 12. 2017. Raising a baby while trying to grow a business, keep up with other responsibilities at home, and finish college at the same time was probably the greatest challenge I had ever faced.

After months of going back and forth with myself on what my next step was, I finally made the decision to dive into photography full time! I remember the tears I shed just thinking about not completing my Bachelor’s degree in Art History since being full-time photographer meant putting school on hold for the moment. After all that work, I felt like a quitter. I felt defeated again. Then I looked at the precious little face of my daughter and reminded myself why I was taking that leap of faith. I wanted more for her! Being away from her the majority of the week, locking myself in the room to study, and being tied up with events on the weekends just wasn’t working for us.

My husband Peter has always been my greatest supporter. He challenged me and encouraged me to follow my dreams of growing my business, even when I didn’t believe in my myself and when I thought I was being completely illogical. I believe an education is extremely important, but I have to say, deciding to be my own boss and work from home was one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself and my family. I have had the privilege of photographing countless weddings, engagements, and maternity sessions over the years and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Amber Rain Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in couples photography, weddings, and maternity. Whether it is your wedding day, an engagement session, or you’re bringing your bundle of joy home from the hospital for the first time, your love story is your own. It is unique, special, and perfect in every way. I am proud to bring my clients’ love stories to life.

My work carries a frosty feel with mostly cool tones (some times warm depending on the feel of the day). Color combinations consist of a variety of gem tones such as reds, emeralds, blues, and tans. With portraits, I primarily shoot in a natural/lush setting, on the beach, or in a DTLA studio.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would say my proudest moment as a photographer so far, was when I got to shoot my first Desi bridal portraits. I have met so many beautiful people in the event industry. A little over a year ago was when I met my good friend Shumaila from So Cal Event Planners. It was then that I gained the opportunity to start photographing Desi events. She is just one of the few vendors that I have come to develop a friendship with this past year. Branching out from my typical line of work, and exposing myself to various cultures has been one of the most rewarding and incredible experiences.
