Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex and Amanda Velasco.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex and Amanda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I was always very crafty and creative. I went through so many phases: scrapbooking, crocheting, party décor, you name it. In 2013, my husband and I bought our own house and decorating our very own home became an addiction. It obviously became costly, so I slowly began making my own signs and décor, thinking my husband was going to kill me every time I asked him to cut me another piece of wood. But to my surprise, he actually enjoyed it. Soon enough, we were getting more and more creative and making pieces for family and friends. We loved seeing the look on their faces when we made their ideas come to life. That’s when we decided to take our pieces a bit further and start a small business entitled Mason James Designs, named after our firstborn. He inspired us to do something more and follow our passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working with different types of wood and paints has been a definite struggle. There are so many tricks and tips to this trade, that you either have to figure it out on your own by trial and error or learn from someone else. There are so many awesome makers out there that have helped us along the way, and we hope to do the same for others that are just getting started.
Mason James Designs – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mason James Designs specializes in home and event décor. We have done quite a few weddings just this past year, and it is so much fun to customize pieces for every bride. Above all, holiday pieces are my favorite. I absolutely love the holidays, so I enjoy getting creative with those.
I believe our pieces are very unique and are mostly personalized to every individual. We spend time perfecting our craft to make our customers happy and to receive something that is even better than what they had envisioned. We also don’t use a laser machine for our cut-outs. My husband uses a scroll saw, which you don’t see very often these days. All of our work is hand-cut and hand-painted.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t think we have just one proud moment. Working as a husband and wife team is never easy, and I am so happy and proud of us for being able to do something we love, work as a team, and raise our family all at the same time. We just had our second child on October 4th, with a 2-year-old running around as well. Our hands are full, but we are happier than ever!
