Meet Alle Weil of Flora ex Machina in Los Feliz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alle Weil.

Alle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My road into health and healing was largely due to my own debilitating symptoms I experienced from a young age. While my parents were quite holistic-minded, being avid meditators, into Eastern medicine and advocating a diet of mostly fresh organic foods, I still felt a disconnect in how our we looked at our overall health and healing.
Here I was, a young girl with serious depression (diagnosed with bipolar two disorder and on serious mood-stabilizing drugs), struggling with chronic digestive issues and upsets and debilitating, painful periods every month. Not once did doctors question what I ate (including my gastroenterologist!), but jumped to diagnose and prescribe hormones and mind-numbing drugs with some pretty scary side effects. While I struggled to pull myself out of bed daily and attempt to lead a “normal” life, I fought hard to understand and find answers to what was at the root of my symptoms.

I constantly felt that while doctors told me my symptoms were hereditary or just a part of being a woman, I did not accept my fate or label they imposed on me. I turned to Eastern medicine and Nutrition and drastically changed gears from the Visual Arts degree I was attempting to Holistic Nutrition. I studied hard to understand the connection between the severe symptoms more and more people are faced with today and the food system we have created. It began to make so much sense.

Between my own studies and the holistic and integrative practitioners I had sought out, I was able to overcome my depression and wean myself off all of my prescriptions safely (something that my doctors told me I would never do and warned me against). I healed my gut that I discovered was linked with multiple food sensitivities and additionally balanced my hormones and cycle.

When soon after I completed my studies, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I moved home to care for her and create her own healing regimen. Using mostly whole foods, here was a cancer patient that looked ten years younger, had crystal clear eyes and gaze and healed faster from her surgery than doctors had ever seen. That was the moment that I decided I wanted to turn my knowledge into a career and help other people obtain what I call true health.

Today, I counsel clients through both chronic illnesses or lifestyle tweaks and changes to create lasting health and find fulfillment. This past year, I created a health food product Royal Ghee, which is a deeply nourishing and delicious multi-use superfood spread made from pastured ghee, raw honey and twenty herbs, grasses, and adaptogens. We just launched our newest flavor, Royal Ghee GOLD, which is more immunity focused, featuring herbal ingredients such as turmeric and ashwagandha.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a often bumpy and winding road. Those struggling with severe and chronic illnesses know how hard it can be to complete even the simplest tasks. When I finally finished my BA, I had been to six different schools. I jumped back and forth between my life in NYC and studies to those periods of time when I needed more help and support than I could provide myself.

Thankfully, I had a support system in my family, and they encouraged me to keep pursuing my goals and dreams despite the interruptions. My journey is a part of my lessons though. All that I create, all that I teach, come from my experiences.

I’ve learned so much about the health and wellness industry too as I’ve worked for so many leading brands and movers and makers in the industry along the way. It’s been a wild and entertaining ride to building my own brand and product – and finding sustainable health and balance.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Flora ex Machina – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is called Flora ex Machina and is the hub for my health counseling business, recipe blog, and product, Royal Ghee. I wear a lot of hats as a holistic nutritionist, natural foodie and personal chef, teacher, artist, and creator.

I love working with clients one on one to individualize their health and create sustainable results. I think in our society there is still this idea of the quick fix, fad diets and the silver bullet, which may move the scale, but just aren’t sustainable solutions for the long term. While we are all human, we are also unique and have different lifestyles, genetics, stressors, cravings, etc., etc.

I joke that I am so much more than a nutritionist because so much psychology is involved in understanding what makes people tick. There is so much emotion tied to food and the habits and routines we create. We have to address the whole picture if we are to make any sort of lasting impression. So much of what I do is teaching clients how to tune in and learn more about themselves, regain deeper intuition and teach about the fails of the food industry as far as our health is concerned. It gives me pride that I am teaching people how to reconnect with themselves, their bodies, and reclaim their health.

I am proud of my product, Royal Ghee which was created out of frustration of the health food industry. Marketing and labels trick us into believing that even items filled with refined sugars and grains, rancid oils and flavorings are healthful. After reading one too many ingredient lists on products claiming to be healthy, I set out to create a product that would be functional and nourish deeply, fulfill cravings without sacrificing flavor.

Royal Ghee is inspired by my love of Eastern modalities but created for our fast-paced society. Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I grew up between the rural wilderness and coastline of Maine and cosmopolitan city of Miami, FL, so Southern California fuses many of these qualities of raw nature, just a short drive away, the sea (I realize I could never be landlocked!) and the convenience of just about anything at anytime, day or night.

We are at ground zero for the booming health and wellness industry and have access to some of the most amazing products, teachers and practices. However, I deeply crave a quiet retreat, and the pace of the city can make it more challenging to slow and reflect. Like with any aspect of life, finding that balance is essential.

    I was attracted to Flora ex Machina by the beautiful photos, but the advice on the website has inspired me to reevaluate the importance of nutrition in my life. I use Royal Ghee on my gluten free toast nearly every morning and can’t wait to try Gold!
