Meet Allayah Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allayah Thompson.

Allayah, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A1 Academic Success LLC became a dream for years while I was in my undergraduate career at Loyola Marymount University. I went to LMU on a full scholarship and a grant for my academic achievement in high school. Therefore, money for studies was not an issue but I needed a source of income on the side to enjoy my life. I began meeting families in the community and started tutoring multiple students and parents were very pleased with the results of my academic assistance. Parents would say, “Miss Layah, your tutoring is A1”! That is where the name A1 Academic Success came from.

My clientele grew larger and larger and it became overwhelming because I was also juggling a job at Sony Pictures Entertainment and a 16-unit class schedule. I love education; many people would call me the Nerd of the family. I gain joy from academic excellence no matter how big or how small. Many parents wanted me to tutor their children but I simply could not manage the workload. I began giving clients to classmates and the parents were pleased with my recommendations. I took a step back from the educational field and focused heavily on my role in the entertainment industry but GOD told me to go in a different direction and out of obedience, I followed suit. I was afraid of failure before taking steps forward but then I remembered that I could not let myself get in the way of my own success.

I wanted to silence the naysayers and prove to the world that with the power that is in me, I will turn the student’s educational journey into a successful one. I will break stereotypes and replace it with excellent characteristics in children faced with adversity every day. I researched all the steps to starting a business and I dedicated three hours a day after work to completing those tasks. I built my website on my own, my brand, and my overall concept. I wanted to be different from my competitors by offering a service that catered to all learning styles instead of just one because every student learns differently, at a different speed and have different interests.

I found that this factor would set me apart. We also provide mentorship to our students and treat them as the scholars they are becoming. The tutors in my program are the crème Del la crème of Loyola Marymount’s campus. I began sending out flyers, advertising at local community events, games, grocery stores, and a little bit on Instagram. I am the second business owner in my family, my mom being the first. I am 24 years old with a husband, a two-year-old son, and a business to call my own. Everything I do is for my family.

I come from a large family and I want to be the one pave the way for them in the world of Entrepreneurship. I have many clients all around the West LA, and Silicon beach area and now extending to South Bay cities and Carson. I plan to have tutors from all the colleges in the County of Los Angeles and eventually have clientele all around the United States.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to becoming a 24-year-old CEO of a tutoring company was not smooth at all. I had bumps all the way to launch day. I could not afford a logo designer, website designer or anything. I had to reach out to the family to help kick start filing the documentation with the State. I did not have a team to help me make flyers, advertise, or build my company. I was very fearful I would not gain any clientele. Eventually, things turned out for the best, but I cannot forget that the beginning stages were very rough. I have only been in business since August 2019, and I cannot wait to see where it will be this time next year.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes, I have many mentors who have guided through college that told me I would be doing something other what I thought my career would be.

Wini:

I have a Spiritual mother named Winifred Jackson who is an advocate for children and has been a moving force in the County of Los Angeles for decades. She told me a while back that my career wasn’t going to be in entertainment, it would be in education but in a capacity where you will lead and be of ownership and others will follow.

Parents:

I also have many parents from my previous tutoring days who encouraged me to start my business and connected with important public figures who I can bounce ideas off of or gain legal, and financial advice from.

Husband:

My husband Narrion Thompson who is also my best friend has motivated me to go beyond the mediocre and do what God has called me to do. He is also very supportive and invested in my dream by verbally giving his love and words of wisdom to help me press on.

Mother:

My mother Tawanda Evans has been an entrepreneur in the hair industry for over 25 years and her perseverance and go-getter attitude really is embedded in me. Since she hasn’t accomplished or reached all of her goals my business has encouraged her to not give up on her own visions. We uplift and encourage each other.

Spiritual Leader:

God is my father and my leader without him my business wouldn’t be where it is today. He has placed the right people in my circle and removed the wrong ones. He has replaced my doubts and fears with confidence and bravery.
