Meet Alisa Brooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Brooks.

Alisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a book coach. I’ve always loved stories. I knew I wanted to work in writing and publishing, so after college (where I majored in Literature) I joined the editorial department of a magazine. That was an incredible, whirlwind experience, but wasn’t as fulfilling as I had imagined. So I left to work for myself.

I started out as a freelance writer and editor. Then a client I was editing some articles for called me and said, “Alisa, it’s always been my dream to write a book. Could you help me do that?” I said yes. A few months later Get Real, Get Married was published. My client’s book was a success and helped her relaunch her business. We were both amazed by the whole experience: She developed a love of writing, and I discovered just how much I loved helping bring other people’s stories to life.

I now help writers of all kinds—including business, memoir, and fiction writers—write and publish their books.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth, but it definitely has been an adventure! I think the bumpiest parts of my journey have been honing in on what exactly I wanted to do. I’ve worked in many different areas of writing, editing, and publishing, even after I started my own business. It took years to realize that helping other people write their books was my passion, and that is now my focus.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I specialize in helping self-published authors capture their stories and publish their books—with ease. I work one-on-one with my clients to get them through their book projects as quickly, efficiently, and painlessly as possible. I tailor their plans to their schedule, and we go through it together every step of the way.

Some of my clients have years of experience writing, some have zero experience. But they all needed some expert guidance to get them on the right path, and some steady, reassuring help to walk them to the end of it. That’s what I do.

My personal specialty is in maintaining my client’s voice. Your story is always yours uniquely, and I feel it’s so important for that to come through to your readers. I work hard to get to know my clients and understand the way they think, talk, and write so that what makes it onto the page really captures who they are.

I think what I’m most proud of is how happy my clients are. I always aim to create a finished product that meets their goals, but usually my authors say that their books far exceeded their expectations. Hearing that is my favorite part of my job.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have just tried things faster, rather than attempting to perfect them before starting. Research and planning are great, but after you understand the basics, you learn so much more from doing than from theory.
