Meet Alina Averianova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alina Averianova.

Alina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a story lover. Have always been one. The only difference is that most people read the stories, or listen to them, or watch them – while I, doing everything mentioned above, am also creating stories. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Screenwriting back in Moscow at the oldest film school in the world, All-Russian State University of Cinematography then moved on to Master’s degree in Filmmaking at New York Film Academy. Now I am working as a script supervisor and a director in Los Angeles.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Everyone who lives abroad faces the same struggles: we cannot be next to our family members when they get sick, we don’t see our childhood friends getting married, the active vocabulary in our native language starts shrinking (and this is especially painful for those who is supposed to use it as a working tool, like me, being a screenwriter). But, honestly, it all depends on the perspective. I believe that me growing professionally and becoming more financially stable here is a bigger support to my family than my physical presence in their house. And missing the major events in my friend’s and family’s lives is just the choice I have to make if I want to – and, trust me, I do – keep working where I currently am.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
There are no two people with the same life views, experiences and opinions – that’s why whoever decides to tell the story (as soon as he does it honestly and authentically) is de facto unique. In this sense I am as unique as any other passionate artist and as common as anyone of them. I have, though, a dream-like ongoing project, which is very special – at least, to me, as it brings together my two main hobbies. I am working on combining the filmmaking tools with the brain studies to make motion pictures be able to actually cure. Like binaural sounds are used for meditations, I believe movies have a big treating potential. This is more of a leisure research for me at the moment though, as most of my time is dedicated to the actual on-set work.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would love to just keep making good movies.
