Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Paley.

Alicia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in an urban town in New Jersey, across the river from mid-town Manhattan. We lived on the second floor of a three-family house. This house was built in 1899 and had crystal door knobs, old wood floors, and a skeleton key to get into the front door of the house, which led to a vestibule. My grandparents lived down the street in a building built in the 1920’s. Their vestibule had black and white hex tile on the floor and white marble steps that led into the first floor of the building. Going up the stairs to my grandparent’s apartment, there was plater wainscoting. Their bathroom had a clawfoot tub and a pedestal sink. Their living room had tall ceilings and picture frame moulding on the walls. I fell in love with all these elements and developed a real appreciation for interiors and architecture. However, I did not go into interior design as a career right away. I earned a BA in psychology, with a minor in art, and became a teacher instead.

Interior design was never out of my system though. I drew space plans for furniture placement for my apartment as well as my classroom, made my own window treatments, refinished furniture and even tackled reupholstering a sectional! I often helped friends design and decorate their homes. I taught until I had my children. It was several years later, when I thought about going back into the work force that it dawned on me that I should pursue my passion. I went back to school and got a degree in interior design. Shortly after completing the degree, I started my own business where I specialize in environmentally friendly, residential interior design. My degree in psychology and experience in education allow me to work and communicate with my clients well. I feel like I’ve come full circle and have incorporated all the various experiences of my life being the best designer I can be.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest struggle has been gaining clients on a consistent basis. This career has lot of ebbs and flows. There are months when I have several projects going at once, and other months when I have one or none. My struggle is getting my name out there to generate more leads.

Please tell us about Alicia Paley Home Interiors.
I specialize in environmentally friendly design, and am the only designer in the Conejo Valley to do so. I’m known for providing my clients with a very personal experience. No two projects are ever the same. I am very client centered, meaning that each design is unique to that client’s needs, personality and interests. I have many local resources that provide quality craftsmanship, for all styles, in construction as well as furnishings. I provide quality and value for my clients.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Watching the Fourth of July fireworks over the Hudson River. Macy’s would shoot them off of a barge and the view was incredible. You had the beauty of the fireworks with the New York skyline in the background.
