Meet Alice Maples of Recess Everyday

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Maples.

Alice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a mission focused person. My goal is to make the world a happier and healthier place. The journey I’ve taken to get to where I am today has been a global voyage and exploration. Below are a few notable points along my journey that have lead me to today.

I studied holistic healing and community health in Costa Rica. I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities in Beijing, China. I worked for the Non-Profit HealthCorps in a low-income High School, teaching Health Education, ran wellness programs, collaborated on school and community-wide events, and did quite a bit of mentoring. Became a wellness professional and have worked with numerous companies including Equinox, Yogaworks, Gympass, Elevation, and a few other boutique studios.

Then after COVID shut down all Los Angeles in person operations, I brought my business 100% online. I currently teach virtual fitness and yoga classes, and I offer wellness coaching and personal training services.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say the journey has been both ruthlessly brutal and utopian bliss.

The Good:
It is my life’s joy and purpose to show people their potential, guide my students and clients to health and happiness and to hear story after story of pain erased, hope regained, passion reignited, joy explored, and peace in the now.

The Bad:
You can’t just be good at what you do as a fitness professional. You also have to be a good marketer! You have to know how to sell yourself as a wellness professional. Especially in the beginning of my career, I had to completely learn marketing and sales techniques which felt so confusing! I just wanted to help people, but you can’t help people if they don’t know what you do. So, if you want to be successful financially, you need to be talented in sales.

The Ugly: As a young woman in the fitness industry, I received crazy amounts of sexual harassment and assault. I can’t tell you how many reports I had filed, tears shed, and jobs I just couldn’t tolerate because of the negative culture behind the curtain.

Please tell us about Recess Everyday.
I have a brand new company, Recess Everyday! I found I was beginning to outgrow my first business Alice Maples Coaching, and wanted to be able to expand offerings, classes and services.

The mission of Recess Everyday is to Play Everyday. To make sure each and everyday, we move our body, take a break from the grind, and take a moment for ourselves.

I specialize in helping busy professionals take a break. The type of break? It could be one of my midday classes offered to re-energize! Or it could be having a wellness coaching session where we develop a plan on how to meditate everyday, or it could be a personal training session where we do a hybrid Yoga+Fitness+Meditation session specifically tailored to the needs of their day.

What I am most proud of is how dynamic, flexible and personalized my offerings are from decades of research, experience and focus on client outcomes- – I know this is what separates me from the majority of fitness and yoga companies…because I have worked or been a patron for many of them.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wish I would have left a lot of the toxic companies I worked with a lot sooner!

I’m very grateful for where I am today.
