Meet Alhambra Professional Makeup Artist: Nina Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to the fantastic Nina Lopez.

Nina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my journey back in 2009 I was going through a break-up and spent a lot of time online. I stumbled upon makeup tutorials and the more I watched. I realized that this could be a possible career. I had always loved makeup and would spend my hard earned paycheck on the newest makeup. So I enrolled in a class at El Camino College it teaches you makeup in about 6 weeks. After my class, I took as many classes that were available to me.

Thru a friend I later met Jason Sanchez, artist and instructor at East Los Angeles College. This course was a more Advanced than the previous course I had taken. It was then that doors started to open up for me. The instructor would often post opportunities for jobs such as assisting. I would always answer the post and be the first person to respond. After showing lots of interest, and hard work I became the instructors assistant. We worked on many fun projects together, such as working with the brand Milani Cosmetics. I assisted him for about a year. Then I began working on my own projects. Often on jobs you make friends and they would refer you when other projects needed a makeup artist. It was then that I realized how important social media is so I changed my personal Instagram page to my makeup page and displayed my work.

Through Instagram, I met my mentor and friend named Leslie Rodriguez. @makeupbylez is an accomplished hard working makeup artist. Assisting Leslie, I not only learned so much, she helped me gain more confidence in my work. Mostly she believed in me. That was important to me because she’s this amazing artist and it was a huge boost of confidence that she liked my work. With the help of Leslie I got the chance to work on projects that otherwise I don’t think would have been possible if it wasn’t for her. She brought me on to work on her team for the 2015 MTV VMA’s. That was such an amazing experience. Not to mention the countless photo shoots and commercials she brought me on too. It was the best on the job training you can get. Leslie has not only helped me out but many other up and coming artists. It was also thru her contact that I was able to work backstage at New York fashion week. Working NY fashion week is a makeup artist dream. Also joined LA fashion week. This was so exciting for me. Today I’m a freelance artist and I try to work as much as I can. I’m currently working with a beautiful actress named Lilimar Hernandez from Nickelodeon’s Bella and the Bulldogs. She is so sweet and fun.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road has defiantly not been smooth at all. Makeup isn’t my main job right now, and it’s something I struggle with. I have a 9-5 and wish I was able to just focus on my freelance career. But that’s not in the cards right now . But I will continue to work hard to make that possible.

Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
As for the role of luck on my journey, I feel extremely lucky to have been born and raised in Los Angeles. A lot of artists dream of coming here. So I never take it for granted. In life, I haven’t always had the best luck but I like to look at it like with this life it isn’t always about luck but remaining humble and always paying it forward.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Remaining humble is a huge part of my success. Never let ego get in the way. Most important don’t be a Diva! You can learn from anyone. Always keep an open mind. Learn to see the lesson in every situation.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What’s love about my city is there so much community and art, and people from all walks of life. I love glitz and glam of Hollywood!
