Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfonso Garcia.
Alfonso Garcia is 26 yr old, first generation Mexican-American artist born and raised in West Los Angeles. He’s best known for his hand lettering styles, which he masters in several mediums from Gold leaf on glass, to exterior typography murals and most recently using the human body as a canvas by learning the art of tattooing. His job at the time, as a sales associate at Blick Art Materials, for four years encouraged him to experiment with a wide variety of media and materials. He attended the Sign Graphics program at LATTC in 2013 where he learned the basics of sign painting from Doc Guthrie for one year then soon after apprenticed for one year & half at a professional private tattoo studio in Downtown Los Angeles & started his career as a freelance artist soon after.
“This year, I had the pleasure of participating in the ‘BEYOND THE STREETS’ which is the premier exhibition of graffiti, street art and beyond, in Los Angeles in the summer 2018 for the Ron Finley installation for his gangster garden. I was commissioned to hand paint two benches that read “We Grow” and “Together”. I also subcontract for two Outdoor Advertising Companies specializing in large-scale, hand-painted murals which are Overall murals from Brooklyn, New York & Old city artist from Burbank, California.
Please tell us about your art.
I specialize in custom lettering from a wide variety of mediums such as tattooing, sign painting, calligraphy & aerosol art. I create and design upon my canvas and or layout. The inspiration behind sign painting itself as a medium is very unique in itself because it isn’t seen as much as other mediums due to plotters and business owners transitioning towards vinyl signs and banners instead of them being hand painted. Hopefully, the viewers can appreciate and keep the traditions of these art forms alive and keep it true to its root as much as possible.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
In the path of being an artist, there is a lot of financial challenges due to purchasing supplies or having a space to work out of, etc. But on all honesty, you got to search for the best prices for the supplies you’d be needing and a lot of investing into yourself from documentation or having electronic devices to produce the best quality and present viewers the best you can.
