Meet Alexis Carra and Chryssie Whitehead of Broadway Arts Camp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Carra and Chryssie Whitehead.

Alexis and Chryssie are Broadway and TV veterans and longtime best friends who met performing on the 1st National Tour of Fosse in 2001. They have both shared a passion for teaching while working in the industry.

Alexis graduated from Yale University, Cum Laude, with a BA in Theatre Studies, and Chryssie graduated with a BA in Performing Arts from St. Mary’s College and earned a certificate in Musical Theatre Concentration at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

Throughout their performing careers, they have taught dance, directed and choreographed, coached musical theatre performance, acting for camera, and monologues for auditions across the globe.

They are both adjudicators and teach at AMDA College and Conservatory for the Performing Arts in New York and Los Angeles. They still DO what they TEACH and embody their teaching philosophy.

Their mission and impetus for Broadway Arts Camp is to pass along what they’ve learned and impart the wisdom from their 20 years of experience in Hollywood and on Broadway as professional actors, singers, and dancers.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a long and winding road to quote the Beatles. Because we have taught so much we felt if we built our own program students would come flooding in… our first year we only had 12 students!

But with more time and some solid marketing materials and word of mouth we grew three times by year two! We had 35 students and expanded to include BAC JR a program for younger artists ages 8 to 12.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Broadway Arts Camp story. Tell us more about the business.
Broadway Arts Camp is a 10-day performing arts intensive for aspiring artists at any age and level who are serious and passionate about honing their skills in dance, acting, and singing. We train our students to love doing the work focusing on the technique and dedication it takes to become great storytellers.

Our mantras are “The joy is in the work” and “Practice makes progress.” We emphasize the whole student… not just the parts of their talent that involve performing. What makes us different is the safe environment we create to explore, collaborate, grow, make mistakes, learn from them, continue to fail upwards and have fun the whole time.

Our students become family, and it is evident in the community we create. And in the end, we teach that community and relationships are the best part of life AND certainly a career in the Entertainment Industry.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We would like to train teachers to do what we do, and we want to expand internationally as well as offer online courses and more chances for people who can’t attend our ten days or three-day intensives to train and work with us.
