Meet Alexandra DiMarchi of Airbrush by Alexandra in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra DiMarchi.

Alexandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am an airbrush tanning artist in Los Angeles and the founder of Airbrush by Alexandra. I relocated from Virginia to LA in 2013 to attend the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising where I majored in Beauty Industry of Merchandising & Marketing. I applied to FIDM after years of working in salons and for cosmetics brands. My focus switched from makeup to sunless tanning when my two good friends who are aestheticians educated me on the long term effects of sun damage after seeing me come back from Miami shades darker than my natural skin tone.

Safe tanning became my sole focus and I was already a user of self-tanners, but I was not an advocate of “spray tans” due to a terrible service I had that left me orange years before. I researched everything I could to familiarize myself with – self-tanning brands, tanning salons, manufacturers, what types of ingredients are used in formulas and who was already successful in the industry. I had always wanted my own beauty salon in the future and decided it was going to specialize in sunless tanning. I want to help others achieve a healthy complexion whether it be a darker bronze appearance or a light glow to even one’s skin tone. All of this is what led to me learning the application and offering the service. So, I moved to LA, completed my education and utilized every connection I had to start and grow my business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road when you are an entrepreneur, but the struggles are always worth it. I’ve had industry blocks, FIDM had never had a student wanting to focus on sunless tanning, the industry already has successful tanning artists, huge connections, and collaborations taken from me, professional relationships ending badly but, they were all learning experiences and I’ve trained myself to keep pushing when things are not working in my favor.

My biggest struggles have been mental, such as moving way from my loved ones, believing in my goals, convincing myself I could make a name in the industry. I am from an area where most people work 9-5 government jobs so moving to LA for “tanning” seemed far fetched and I heard of a lot ofs “You’re going to make a living doing what?” Now, I love when I go home and those same people who were unsure of what I was doing say ” I saw you tanned so and so!”

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Airbrush by Alexandra – what should we know?
My business specializes in airbrush tanning and skin finishing services. I customize each client’s color after having a brief consultation to find out their reason for the service. Something that sets me apart is my prior experience as a makeup artist. I apply that experience to my tanning techniques and my attention to detail. I am not just “spraying” someone, I am perfecting their skin tone and making sure their entire body is even and blended as well as contoured if requested.

As a small business owner, I am most proud of the reputation I have built. Recently, a beauty blogger I work with screenshot a text message to me from a celebrity makeup artist that was raving about my services. I pride myself on being professional, timely and providing the best in home luxury service, so it was a great feeling for all of those qualities to be recognized by another well-known beauty professional.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
That’s a tough one. I don’t have a specific moment, because I am always setting new goals. There have been multiple times I’ve said “this is the best moment of my career” then set another goal and accomplished it. Seeing my work on red carpets, magazines, ad campaigns, etc. were great, but they were all equally proud moments. For now, I am most proud of the opportunities I have created for myself and for building a business in a city that is thousands of miles away from my comfort zone and support system.
