Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Drachnik.
Alex, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Alex Drachnik and my I work as two completely different types of “creatives” in LA! I work on TV Shows & Movies as a Camera PA, Camera Operator & Photographer. How that started is I grew up surrounded by cameras and creativity in my house.
I was always fascinated by Movies & YouTube and at the age of 13, my friend asked me to shoot a music video project for school. I had a little point and shoot camera so I switched it to video mode, shot this music video, edited in on iMovie & uploaded it to YouTube and from that day, my life was changed. I started making YouTube videos which turned into making short films with friends, I studied and got a degree in film production at SDSU all while still photographing and camera operating my own projects.
I finally made the move to LA from SDSU where I now currently work as a PA on SWAT (A TV show on CBS) where I am working closely as a Camera PA to hopefully one day get into the Local 600 which is the Camera Union in LA! On my off days, I shoot my own photos for companies and content for people across different social media platforms.
My other business: I am also an online fitness coach and bodybuilder! I work these two completely different jobs but make it work. How that started is I played sports my entire life and was always active and my senior year at SDSU, I got broken up with and my broke my foot all within the same week and couldn’t do much. I gained some weight & had enough of feeling sorry for myself. I saw a girl at my school gym who was in great shape, asked her what she did, she told me bodybuilding and I was instantly fascinated.
I did my first bodybuilding show in March 2017 and now I am about to compete in my 8th bodybuilding show. In 2019, I was starting to get to a point where I was being asked for fitness advice but felt weird giving it out for free and decided I should give online fitness coaching a shot. I had ten clients within the first week and was blown away how much I was helping people! I now have numerous clients with amazing transformations and some of my clients have even now been inspired to do bodybuilding shows themselves.
So… to conclude: I work in TV & film & help people change their lives with fitness & health!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Film: my first year in LA was tough. I couldn’t find much-paid work, a lot of people wanted free shoots, I worked a little bit and wasn’t making much money which forced me to get an assistant job that I worked M-F, eight hour days for a year. I realized that right then and there I hated the office life. I hated it. I would rather spend 12 hours on a film set working my ass off then sit in an office for eight hours doing work for someone else ya know?
I get bored easily. So four months into this job, I wanted to make more $, I wanted to help people, I wanted to feel creative…. and that’s when my friend introduced me to Brian Mark who is my amazing business mentor now. Within five minutes of talking to him, I signed up and had my online coaching business started. He changed my life. So at this moment, I was working an office job and running my own online business, making double and helping people and IT FELT SO GOOD.
Now fast forward, I was starting to get really stressed and not liking where I was at. I was scared to quit my office job because I didn’t know how reliable working my own business was? The entrepreneur life is scary. BUT I really wanted to get back to work working on film sets. One day, I had the guts. I quit my office job and now was working solely on my fitness business. Wow. Crazy. I started reaching out to my old contacts for film jobs and now I’m consistently working on TV shows & movies AND running an online business part-time. The glory of my online business is I can literally do it from ANYWHERE!! I am currently the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m doing 2 things I love at the same time and I love living in LA doing it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Film: I’m known for CAMERA WORK and photography! I like to work as an AC (assistant camera, non-union), camera operator (non-union), Camera PA and PA on TV shows and movies. Notable projects I’ve worked on: Once Upon a time in Hollywood, SWAT, Marriage Bootcamp, Top chef, Bizzardvark!
I am still nonunion but my five-year plan is to get my camera days and get into the union which is where the big projects are. I also am going to be taking Steadicam lessons soon as that is something I want to pursue as well. As for my own company, I create content and short films for companies, photography for fitness brands and I try to shoot as much as my own projects which is hard while balancing everything else going on.
Fitness: I help people lose weight without sacrificing their lifestyle. I like to go out on the weekends and have fun right? So I teach people that they can go out and do the same and stay in shape! It’s do able, you just need to put a little bit of effort in and you can do it! I love helping people. All my clients are on a platform that’s an app on your phone, I schedule workouts for them, I build nutrition programs and I keep them accountable by having them check in every week! It’s so rewarding being able to help people change their bodies and their lives!!! It changed my life.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success: As cliche as this sounds, “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”
Success is when you finally do the thing you’ve always wanted to and you wake up every day EXCITED to excel and learn and grown more within that area of expertise!
