Meet Aleksey Bishop of Aleksey_Hair in Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleksey Bishop.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Aleksey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have loved hair since I was a child. I used to cut, style and color the hair of American Girl Dolls, Barbies and anything else I could get my hands on. I spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos about hair and taught myself a lot about color and cut by experimenting on my own hair and my friend’s hair. When I was 12, I started volunteering at a local salon in my hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska. I graduated to working the reception desk and styling mannequin heads and sometimes doing the stylist’s hair. I also did prom updos and the hair for the characters in the high school musicals. When I was 14, I came to California with my grandmother to tour Vidal Sassoon and Paul Mitchell. I am dyslexic and have always struggled in school.

After turning 16, and two years after talking back and forth, Sassoon let me start their program without finishing high school. I moved to Santa Monica and lived here alone while going to school and graduated the following January. I passed my cosmetology exam and started looking for opportunities. I started volunteering to help Chris McMillan at the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills. This led me to being able to assist my current boss, Justin Anderson. One of my favorite celebrities growing up was Miley Cyrus. In her show, Hannah Montana, I loved all the wigs and hair extensions that her character had. One of my biggest dreams growing up was to be able to style her hair. I assisted my boss, Justin Anderson, in coloring her hair and doing hair treatments. She texted me to style her hair for an Eater photo shoot. It happened to be my first photo shoot and all the photos were released on my 21st birthday on Vogue.com.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having a learning disability and ADHD made being successful in school very difficult for me. I worked very hard to be successful at Sassoon and pass my Cosmetology Exam. Some of the struggles once I graduated were not being able to break into my first choice of salons to assist at. I had my heart set on working at the Ken Paves Salon. Also, I worked towards a job for two years and was promised it but it was given to someone who has no hair experience but has a very attractive physical appearance. I am currently struggling to balance three full-time jobs; working as a full-time assistant to Justin Anderson, trying to build up my own base of clients on nights and weekends and being available at all times for Miley Cyrus. She is someone I work with quite often thanks to the generosity and flexibility of Justin Anderson who has given me the opportunity and time to work with her.

Please tell us about Aleksey_Hair.
In big cities, people tend to specialize in either coloring hair, cutting hair or styling hair. Hair is something that I am absolutely passionate about. I really enjoy doing them all and don’t want to have to choose to do just one when I love doing them all.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would not have done anything differently. Even though looking back over everything that has happened, there have been times that have been difficult, I don’t think I would want to change anything I have done.

Great story of an amazing young man. Lex has faced adversity and challenges with maturity beyond his years.
