Meet Alec Carlson of Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Carlson.

The Automobile Driving Museum started as the private collection of Stanley Zimmerman many years ago. As the collection grew and as Mr. Zimmerman became more involved in the hobby he decided to open his doors to the public. They have been in their current location for going on 11 years as a 501c3 non-profit corporation that operates with a small staff and countless volunteers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to our success has been bumpy at times but we have yet to face a challenge that cannot be conquered. We have changed management staff several times throughout the years and have felt the growing pains of doing so. In spite of that, we have grown and become a better managed and more customer service-oriented business. Our primary goal has always been to keep the history of the automobile alive and to educate the general populous, both young and old, how the automobile has changed the world. As far as we know, we have done the task justice.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Automobile Driving Museum story. Tell us more about the business.
Here at the ADM our mission statement is to collect, preserve, exhibit and ride in historic vehicles of all variation. We have approximately 120 cars in our collection ranging from the year 1886 to 2000. We strive to keep our collection in fully functioning condition as to better tell the story of the automobile and display the functional evolution through the decades. The ADM is best known for its unique tactile experience. We allow our guests to get into our cars and have a seat behind the wheel and fully appreciate every inch of every car. Generally speaking, our mentality is that if a car was built to be driven, why not drive it? Every Sunday we select three to four different cars from our collection and have them parked out front for our guests to ride in as a part of their tour. Another function worthy of noting is our rentable venue space. We have a large ballroom in the museum that is rentable for any corporate or private event. From weddings and birthday parties to corporate holiday parties and business expos we have been host to thousands of people all of whom had access to view the cars in the collection while attending the function, making our venue an entertaining place to host an event.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We experience good luck on a daily basis. We are very fortunate to have an excellent staff that works well together and makes each guest experience one of a kind. Also considering we work with cars that are up to 100 years old, we are very lucky to have the mechanical talent and know-how in house to keep all of our cars in operating condition.
