Meet Alda Escarcega of Puro Flamenco in Santa Barbara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alda Escarcega.

Alda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have grown up in a city where during the summer there is one specific week dedicated to celebrating the old Spanish days in Santa Barbara. There is where I began dancing and performing flamenco at the age of three. Since then, flamenco has been a crucial part of my life, my biggest passion. I have dedicated most of my life to this dance form and Puro Flamenco is the place where I get to share my passion with others. I hope that they will love it as much as I do!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was so fortunate to have an amazing base of clientele from a previous business venture and support from so many friends and colleagues that made beginning my business a smooth road. I had opened January 2020 and signed my lease to my beautiful flamenco oasis in February but the smooth road was very short-lived when COVID-19 stay at home orders took place in March. To say it has been a struggle is an understatement but I, just like many others did my best to adjust quickly and kept going amidst the uncertainty.

Please tell us about Puro Flamenco.
Puro Flamenco is a dance studio dedicated to supporting and nurturing one’s flamenco aspirations. We teach Men and Women of any age as well as boys and girls as young as three years old the fundamentals of flamenco, technique and choreography. Flamenco has the power of integrating itself in your heart and soul and because of that it pushes me, as an artist and dancer to continue learning and evolving. I travel to Spain as often as possible to further my education as well as take workshops and lessons with renowned flamenco masters of our time to bring back and share with the dancers entrusting me to teach them.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
No, I wouldn’t change a single thing. Opening my business and enduring the hardships the year has brought has just reaffirmed my belief in myself and to never give up. EVER. I am the woman I am today, stronger and braver than ever because of it.
