Meet Alberto Accettulli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Accettulli.

Alberto, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Genoa, Italy – and moved to Milan after college to start working in advertising. When I was a kid, my dream was to become a professional freestyle mountain biker and while looking for a sponsor, I started to record myself with an amateur camera doing tricks and stunts. Luckily the video was a success and I turned a pro rider, but I continued to play with my camera for fun. After a few years (and a couple of bad crashes) I realized that I was much better behind the camera than in front of it and left the riding career to put my whole focus on filmmaking.

At that time the show Jackass on MTV was very popular and I thought that if they could make a show using amateur equipment, I could do the same. I started shooting videos for action sports brands such as Nike, Red Bull, Eastpak and other technical brands. Being an action-sport-lover allowed me to start shooting cars and motorcycles, as a natural transition after shooting freestyle riders and sport.

After a few years living in Milan, I moved to Indonesia! What an amazing place and a great developing country for advertising. I was living and working in Jakarta, but also kept traveling all over the world making action films. Best time of my life! About four years ago, I was chasing my dreams to make movies, and I moved to Los Angeles because I wanted to be surrounded by people in the industry. I found the perfect environment to live and work.

Has it been a smooth road?
Los Angeles is certainly a tough city. It’s huge, expensive, spread out… nobody walks anywhere, and you have to drive everywhere. Dealing with the heavy traffic is a pain. Working here is not easy as well, because of the extreme level of competition. It takes time to get used to the city, to understand what you have to do to develop your business, especially if you’re by yourself and don’t know anybody. You certainly need a business plan. If you just want to hang out…well, LA will eat you alive! The biggest challenge for me was actually staying in Los Angeles…spending enough time over here, because I had many other opportunities and jobs in other countries. If you don’t live in Los Angeles for real, it’s impossible to grow your business. The city requires you full time if you want to make it work. If you keep doing back and forth it’s not going to work. It took me almost two years to realize that. Refusing jobs in other countries to simply spend more time in LA and be available “just in case” was the most challenging part of my American adventure. At the moment, I think I found a perfect balance, but it takes time and tears!

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in automotive, motorcycle, extreme sports and active lifestyle. That’s what I do best and what I think I’m known for. Because of my background in the freestyle world, my team and I have that kind of attitude that everything’s possible. It’s never a matter of money, budget…I personally hate when a producer tells me, “We don’t have the money for it.” This is also the reason why I established my own company so I could be able to say “let’s do it no matter what it takes”. My brother Fabrizio is another excellent director and cinematographer and my business associate as well.

We do believe that in most of the cases it’s not a matter of money, it’s a matter of creativity. When you have to face a challenge you know what Italians do best? We make calls! We call a friend, who knows a guy, who knows another guy, who’s got his brother in law working for another guy who ends up being your cousin…and this “cousin” is going to resolve your problem! We’re very good at it! We believe in finding solutions out of the box, no matter the money or how we’re going to make it. My team has an action sport background and this kind of no limits attitude that has been very important to accomplish great results!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Nowadays, there is so much video content out there that I cannot imagine a better moment to grow your business making amazing films. In the next 5 to 10 years there will be more, and even more business opportunities! We all love to scroll images and videos a hundred times a day. So there will always be a market for that. Entertaining people is the key, but I do believe that it’s not how you do it, it’s not through the story nobody will remember… but it’s how often you entertain your audience. You have to keep feeding it. What you have shown last week is already a year old and what you have shown today is not cool anymore…and we all have to deal with that.
