Meet Albany Katz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Albany Katz.

Albany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I found photography early on in High School. I was one of the students that stayed late in photo class to soak up all the time in the darkroom. I was hooked immediately. I had found my art. The backstory of my life is that I was raised by two artists who had a bias towards art and travel over the traditional career path. I would not be where I am now without the support of my parents- so I have to say thank you to them for helping me find my passion. After high school, I went to college for photography and pursued fashion photography. My goal was to move to New York after school and live out my dream. After assisting in LA for a while, I grew out of fashion and focused more on my personal work.

I found my love of the darkroom again and shooting film- which led to finding jobs in photo labs around town in order to finance my personal photography projects. I focused my work on natural landscapes and was inspired by the early pictorialist photographer Anne Brigman. From that, I created a body of work centered around photographing the National Parks of the United States through a plastic pinhole camera. This series is ongoing and I am always working on it whenever I get to travel to a new National Park. My passion for photographing people and fashion never really died after college, so I decided to focus on portrait, wedding, and engagement photography when I started by business in January 2019. My goal is always to stretch the limits, be as creative as possible, and utilize nature, color, light, and different photographic mediums to tell stories.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is the road ever smooth?! My road has been a winding roller coaster ride of being between wanting to just take pictures for the art of it versus wanting to make a living off of being a photographer. It has been a huge push/pull, but I feel like the past two years have really helped me realize I can do both!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is focused primarily on weddings, portraits, and fashion… with an adventurous/artsy/experimental twist. I love traveling, camping, nature, fashion, and LOVE – so I want my business to reflect those values. I also shoot a mix of film cameras and digital cameras and like to experiment with flash, gels, and prisms to create unique imagery.

I would say I “specialize” in photographing people. Every image I take is a collaboration between me and the subject. I love riffing off of the energy of a person or couple and creating art with it. It is a challenge that I am always up for. I also like to juxtapose nature or utilize nature in as many compositions as possible. If you want to get married on top of a mountain in a National Park, I am your photographer! If you want to elope on a cliff in Big Sur count me in! If you want to host a wedding-campout in the middle of the desert, please hire me! But also if you want to just get married in your backyard with your favorite people celebrating your love- that is my happy place.

Recently I have been working with local brands to help photograph their goods which has been amazing. I like being intertwined within the community I live in and using my art to help local brands tell their stories is a huge passion of mine. Before COVID19, I was hosting monthly Portrait Pop Ups in Ventura. I can’t wait to start bringing these back this summer! If you are interested in hearing more about my Portrait Pop Up, sign up for my weekly newsletter so you can stay on top of all my “news”.

What were you like growing up?
Living in a creative household, my childhood was packed with imagination and what felt like limitless possibilities. Even though I didn’t appreciate that freedom back then and it took a while for me to open up and not be afraid of things and new experiences- I am so thankful for how I was raised. From a young age, I enjoyed helping people and community.
