Meet Av Hamilton of Good Source Artist Collective in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Av Hamilton!

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for music started at a very young age! When I was a toddler, I used to go up to the house speaker and turn on the music, according to my Parents. I was always surrounded by music whether it was my Mother’s singing, aunties Singing, or the music from the car rides or get-togethers. Even my Grandfathers Humming and whistling throughout the house. My family was always dancing and grooving, specifically my Mother. I feel in love with sound in general before I even realized it!

In 2008, my 4th grade year, the school I was attending began to offer spots for students to enroll in the band class! I was immediately interested and told my mom as soon as I got home.A letter was sent home with a list of instruments available, I picked trumpet but then started to think maybe I wanted to play trombone. Thankfully, my mother stuck with her gut instinct and encouraged me to stick with trumpet! Mothers always seem to know best.

Through school, I never took a year off from music. I always played in the music programs growing up & loving it. I knew I wanted to be a “professional musician “ at a young age even if other ideas came along with it. I

Graduated from Paloma Valley high school, after a rough time In the school system, In 2016. At this point, I was extremely confident when it came to the trumpet (sometimes to a fault). I enrolled at an amazing Arts Program in riverside (thanks to Chris A. & Sean Hall, and family). While at Coil School for the Arts before school even started, I met a bandleader and Musician named Ben Ah Sue from top-shelf brass Band, also the leader of the band. He invited me to sit in with him at a show that they had coming up and of course I did it. It was an amazing experience and gave me the taste of playing outside of school and being a “professional musician”. He later asked me to play in the band full time which was a blessing.

The band played a bunch of local shows, and eventually, while I was studying at RCC Ben told me that the band was getting an opportunity to Go on tour. The rest was history! 3 month tour all around Europe at age 17.

While on tour, I learned numerous amounts of lessons extending past music that I will carry for the rest of my life. Since I was in the band with older artists, I had to go through some tough learning curves and a lot of musical heartbreak. While on tour, it opened me to seeing another level of being a working musician & also exposed me to a stye of playing that I use to this day, and will always use.

I came back to Coil School Of the Arts after the tour, auditioned for the Jazz Ensemble, and got into the ensemble while being blessed with soloing opportunities. The year before I didn’t make the program. During my later years of CSA I got involved in the Orange County scene and started playing more public shows as an Artist. It taught me a lot and helped me get connected to a lot of the people I now work with Inside the “Good Source Artist Collective”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
All the challenges I went through were turned into success stories by the grace of God!

Rosalind Hamilton, my mother, struggled with kidney disease for over eight years. She passed away twice but came back to life by the glory of God!

I always had a tough time staying out of trouble and making friends while growing up , but that changed senior year… at the end of the year, Shout out Rez & Daniel.

To take it bake a little bit, I got kicked out the band after the Euro Tour with Topshelf brass band, but I learned from my mistakes and moved forward with more wisdom and blessings.

My trumpet Got stolen recently out of my car in Santa Ana, but by the grace of God, I got it back over two months later!

Please tell us about Good Source Artist Collective.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I would’ve started over, I would’ve stuck closer to God at a younger age and practiced trumpet and drums more efficiently!
