Today we’d like to introduce you to Akelee Dove.
Akelee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as just a young girl in Hawthorne CA whom extremely adored singing. Raised as an only child in a heavy environment, music along with my mother easily became my best friends and music became my serene escape. My mom and I would bond over singing along to the great voices of Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and many more. To be honest my mom was strict and I wasn’t able to go outside as most kids were allowed therefore I spent most of my time in my room at a karaoke machine with a mic in my hand studying and dissecting the voices of Whitney Houston and Brandy etc. Passionately in love with music and singing, It was as if I had discovered a whole new universe. I wanted to live there and I did. Quickly noticing how deeply attracted to music I was, my mom decided to take things to another level and signed me up for the first season of what soon became the hit television show American idol. At just the tender age of 17, I made it to the top 45. To be honest, after the show I was terrified and heartbroken however something inside of me let me know that that was only the beginning and I was about to set out on an amazing journey. After the show, I went on to join a local girl group which would prove to be an asset to my development as an entertainer.
After three years that group subsided and simultaneously I worked at the Airport for Tsa part time to help my family pay rent. While at work I was approached by an industry veteran who linked me to two of the most influential producers and songwriters of our generation. Shortly after I was asked to be apart of a girl group that they would head which would call upon me moving to Atlanta Ga. To pursue, my mom, my dad, our cat and I, packed up everything, placed it on a truck, we quit our jobs and moved to GA. I spent 2 years in Atlanta working with several of our industry’s most amazing credited producers and songwriters. As we went on to create an incredible body of work, It was then and there that I truly grew into and learned to vocal produce and song writing.
However, the group began to separate and I found myself at another crossroads. My family and I moved back to Los Angeles and had to start over. Thankfully due to my mom being at her job prior to over 12 years, they accepted her back and even gave me a position at the company. Still determined, my mom and dad pitched in and purchased me a home recording system where I could continue to create. I had no idea what was coming in the next chapter of my life or that the next chapter of my life would require all of the added skills that I had just obtained. However, in this period I began to get a solid vision and unwrap my true purpose. It was then that I declared that “This dream will be followed through no matter how hard or long it was going to take’. Soon after I was introduced to a new young upcoming producer who at the time was an intern at a major studio. We were the perfect match. We both just wanted to create and both of us were extremely talented and exactly what each needed. With the most amazing blessing of the studio owner, we went on to spend the next three years creating my first album titled Roses n blue. Since the release of Roses n Blue I have to date written for artists such as Musiq Soulchild, Faith Evans, etc. and have worked with/written songs for companies such as Disney, Pepsi and more. In 2019 I released 3 new singles. While still determined and walking out the vision/purpose and creating more than ever, I am also now enjoying the wonderful world of motherhood and being a wife. It is a new world for me filled with many wonders however I’m on the same road I just have more loving passengers as the journey continues.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has not been a smooth road. More so mentally than actual physical reality. As I look back I can see how the road has always been there and beautiful. However, I couldn’t see it at the time. the truth was “More always came as long as I kept a willing heart”. The hard part was not knowing or better yet not trusting that more was to come. For some reason, It always seemed like a dead end which internally through me into panic mode or even, to be honest, a deep sadness and internal longing and pain. Me not trusting that I would be perfectly taken care of led to much frustration.
