Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Whitten.
Aja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Alafia and Htpu! Peace to you! I am Aja from the desert and the mountains and of the fork in the road where three rivers of ancestry flow from the fertile soil of our Being, Afrika. My roots run deep and are the foundation of my journey as “she who is a conduit Dark Light.” So it began with my Lola’s father’s great grandmother’s gift of clarsentience (though I once believed it a curse). I remember walking in a store when I was young and as I passed a man I could palpably feel his grief in own body. Confused, I burst into tears and wanted to curl up into a ball in the aisle. My Lola pointed to me and said, “Rebuke the Devil.” I was even more horrified thinking I was crazy. I burst into hysterics adding laughter to my panic and the man’s grief (which now felt like my own) because her words sounded like “Rebuke the Debil”, her Pilipino accent echoing in the store and in my head. You see, just as her conversion to Christianity could not completely rid her of her native tongue, neither could amerikkka exterminate the tradition of indigenous healing ways that flowed through her and into me.
Although parts of her assimilation did not allow her to teach me outright, she imparted the homegrown practices of bringing folks back into balance through plants, food, massage, laughter and an egg in saltwater under the bed to dispel negative energy. She and the brujo that was her father are just some of my guides. The sangre of Tainos from Boriken, “Negritos” from Mindinao, and the spiritual traditions of Kmt inform my practice of care. These all teach that through the “Duat,” our dark night of the soul, we find our Self…guided, tested, gifted, and elevated. I hold space for others in the in-between. I hold space for others to take the breaths and steps necessary to heal themselves. Each modality that I weave together (Kemetic yoga, Ra Sekhi Kemetic Reiki, Massage, Plant Medicine–limpias and womb steams) has been handed down, earned, and been personally effective in unveiling my own Soul’s journey. I’d be honored to share these with you.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
What you call challenges, I call my shadow pushing me back on my path. And I’ve made mad love to it both literally and figuratively. I’ve lived my life in tantric form, embracing every experience in orgasmic death throes, weathered trauma, karma, and floated in the still eye of ecstacy. I, like you, have been abused, suffered trauma, been the object of downpression. Felt alone, responsible, inept, lost, misunderstood and overwhelmed. All roads have led to the continuous spiral of my own healing and opened the passages and initiations that empower me to realize authenticity and to hold sacred comm-union for others as myself. I flounder in self-doubt and the critical voices of my wounds that crust over and fall apart to reveal the freshness of my continued Becoming. We are at war and we each need to be armed with the tools passed down from our ancestors to first strengthen the ways that we feel de’bil (weak). I am my own challenge and everytime I get out of my own way, it’s magickal. Ase’ Mahal Kita! Wepa!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Souljourner Body Work – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Pan AfRakan holistic healer who specializes in personal empowerment through shadow work and igniting ancestral energies within the modern world. I am grassroots. I am radical to the core with a deep love for my people. My energy is that of the fierce and nurturing mother that invites you to play as called by your inner child.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I will stay the course of the path that I’ve chosen and has chosen me. Gratefully deepening my own connection with Source, frolicking with nature and my babies, expanding into more co-creations, launching my website and digital courses, hosting local and international healing retreats, and wombifesting land of my own for collective belonging. I am hosting an upcoming dream work series, continually facilitating healing sessions, and building with the House of Amen. I am a Capricorn with an Aquarius rising so feel at home innovating traditions and architecting the future.
